I?m not originally from Florida and while I have enjoyed my time here, it?s not where I ?belong?.? During the last decade or so, after traveling to the Pacific Northwest a number of times, I often fancied living in either Oregon or Washington.? In the last three years my search became more serious, and I was stalling on coastal communities near Portland and Seattle.? As much as I love both of those cities, I wasn?t ready to jump into a pool of 600,000 people quite yet.

Nice, right? There comes a point for me when trying to accomplish something where I depart from the land of trying oh so hard and move into a space where things are very clearly being forced. It happens quite suddenly. I get this feeling that while working towards a goal I?ve kept my head down and missed all sorts of exits that would have taken me to the place I?m actually meant to be. Sadly I?ve lifted my eyes and all signs lead away from Maine at this current juncture. We would be absolutely foolish to let our overwhelming desire to farm, to get this family settled, to start Our Life be the sole driver towards whatever it is that?s next. Perhaps we?ll revisit this property later and all that?s needed is just a different route to the end. Right now things remain as cloudy and uncertain as ever but we?re surprisingly okay with it. There?s a relief when you know you?re doing the right thing for yourself even if it?s exactly the opposite of what your unchecked childish desires scream out for you to do. We?re headed towards the place we?re meant to be. It?s just further down the line than we anticipated. The last time I found myself forcing life I was telling Craig maybe we just weren?t going to be people who had children, maybe we would just have each other, and maybe that could be enough. What I didn?t know then was that Gus was already in my belly absolutely keen on making us into a family. We just needed to drive down the road in front of us instead of being so set in paving the path just how we imagined. So with this farm we do the same thing we did almost three years ago. We let the current take us where it may. Things will work out in our favor. They always do. It?s just unclear at this point what exactly lies In Our Favor. We have expressed continued interest in the farm so long as they do this, that and the other. And maybe three years from now I?ll be able to write something to the effect of little did I know we?d soon be farming in Maine.. Or maybe I?ll write something along the lines of little did we know our life was going to be ten times better than we could have ever imagined with that money pit of a farm in Maine.. I really can?t say because, you know, I?m just here. Today. And right now we don?t know. And just in case you?re worried that Buster is off the table?don?t be. He?s part of an entirely different plan that takes a little bit of the sting out of losing Maine. But only just a little bit.. Because damn it. We really wanted

Kalmbach Moving Discover Edit Operation to Wisconsin, Closing New York Office
Kalmbach Publishing Company, the parent company of Discover, is closing the magazine?s New York editorial offices and relocating staff to its Waukesha, Wisconsin headquarters. The offices will be closed by January 2013. The edit team is about 20 people, including the designers, and how many will make the move is yet to be determined, says Kalmbach president Chuck Croft. The move was announced publicly yesterday, the same time the company notified staff. However, editor-in-chief Corey Powell and executive editor Pamela Weintraub will continue with the brand. The move is mostly cost-related. Kalmbach, which bought Discover in 2010, has 16 other hobby-related brands based in Waukesha, with 275 employees. Back office functions for the magazine are already located there. Discover was the only outlier. "We don?t intend any big strategic changes to the magazine or the content," notes Croft. "This is being done more for the synergy and integrating all of our media resources."

Jan 25 ? We awoke to a lovely blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Every tree and shrub was covered with a beautiful white mantle. I shoveled snow for the first time in years and loved it. I did both the driveway and our sidewalk. Later, the city snowplow came along and accidentally covered up our driveway and compacted the snow from the street, but the driver smiled and waved, and I waved back and shoveled it again.
