A Selection of Tuscany's Finest Highlights

Tuscany is a region of Italy that attracts many holidaymakers every year. When you stay in Tuscany, villas are there in every village and town to welcome you during your stay. However there are other delights to uncover as well. Regardless of what you like to do on holiday, or where you enjoy going, you will find many highlights worth spending some time on.

Visit the Uffizi Gallery

Even if you would not class yourself as an art lover, do make time to visit the Uffizi Gallery ?otherwise known as the Galleria degli Uffizi ? in Florence. It has fairly long opening hours, from 8.15am right through to 6.50pm all week, except for Mondays when it is closed. Entrance times are regulated to fifteen-minute intervals so the crowds do not detract from the experience of entering the gallery to see what it holds. Arguably, the two finest artworks here are by Botticelli - the Birth of Venus and Primavera.

Visit the Abbadia Isola

When staying in Tuscany, villas of all shapes and sizes are not the only buildings worth looking at! The Abbadia Isola can be found in Monteriggioni, and it is well worth the trip to see inside this stunning abbey. The abbey dates back to the 10th century and its history is evident from the moment you approach it, etched as it is into every brick of its exterior. There is a small hamlet that wraps around the exterior too, further adding to its stature in this area of Tuscany. Villas may be warm and welcoming, but history has shown us that this abbey was also a place of safety and refuge for people who were travelling to and from Rome.

Explore the town of San Gimignano

This Italian region is peppered with myriad hill towns. You could spend an entire week exploring nothing more than these. In Tuscany, villas stand out as being the preferred modern holiday accommodation, but in San Gimignano you will be taken back to medieval times, to a town where life has carried on virtually unchanged throughout the centuries. It is known simply as the City of Beautiful Towers - and for good reason. There were dozens of these towers standing around the town in years gone by, and even though only 14 of them survive to the present day, they are still well worth seeing. The main attraction here is quite simply the town itself, which makes a pleasant change to seeing modern attractions in other parts of Italy.

As you can see from the small selection of options given above, Tuscany is a treasure trove of diverse and attractive destinations to visit. Wherever you might be staying during your time there, make sure you sample a range of experiences ? starting with these.
