Local tennis team wins state title
MACON ? The Valdosta-Lowndes USTA 18-and-under Junior Team Tennis team recently won the state championship.
The team of seven junior tennis players dominated teams from Macon, Atlanta, Kennesaw and Buford to win the state championship.
The state champions will advance to the Southern Section Championships this weekend in Auburn, Ala.
The team was coached by Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority tennis pro Keith Childree.
Although the team had a slow start during the first match, they continued to gain momentum throughout the tournament, and held a four-game advantage going into the last match. Alden Minick and Andrew Greneker?s mixed doubles victory over a team from Buford wrapped up the victory for the Valdosta-Lowndes team. ?
?I am extremely proud of the sportsmanship, teamwork and enthusiasm demonstrated by each player on this team,? Childree said. ?I feel like they have represented Valdosta and Lowndes County well, and have contributed to yet another state championship to make our community proud.?
Under Childree?s supervision, the high school-aged team, which has two seniors, one junior, two sophomores and one freshman, has been practicing four days a week since May.
?This team?s dedication and hard work all summer has paid off,? Childree said. ?Training during the heat of the day, four days per week, prepared them to win this state championship.?
As a Junior Team Tennis coach, Childree has won four state championships, one southern championship and one national championship.
