Poverty Report 2011: Factories didn?t prepare workers for jobs of today

It stands to reason that new jobs, paying decent wages and benefits, are necessary to help a region battle poverty. Some factors that contribute to poverty here may also hinder economic development. It?s a conundrum with which officials at the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Agency are familiar.

Population Loss

GREDA President Tom Schmidt said population loss has to be taken into consideration. Knox County?s population peaked at more than 61,000 people in the 1960s. Today, it stands at about 51,000.

?We seem to be at a level consistent with what it was in the 1930s,? Schmidt said.

That means 10,000 fewer people buying food, clothes and other merchandise, eating at local restaurants, shopping at stores here, etc.

?The sheer magnitude of the drain of human resources has an impact on the economic health of a community,? he said.

Using figures from the Healthy Communities study commissioned by the Knox County Health Department, Oliver Ferguson, director of the Knox County Development Corp., said in 2008, 57 percent of the population in Knox County had only a high school education or slightly more.

Part of the problem is area young people who leave for college often do not return after completing their studies.

?We?re not retaining those who have the higher skill sets. It makes it more difficult to attract the high-tech jobs,? Schmidt said.

Citing additional figures from the Healthy Communities study, Ferguson said the demographics of the area tell an interesting story. Twenty percent of the population in Knox County is younger than 18, while 20 percent is 65 and older. He said the most productive earning years are 45-54. He said people between the ages of 35 and 44 ?are really kind of building their careers.? Fourteen percent of Knox County?s population is in the 45-54 age range, with 11.9 percent 35 to 44.

?It?s not just the education level, there?s a key demographic of workers we are lacking,? Ferguson said.

A Tipping Point

Manufacturing, along with the railroads, was the area?s economic engine for many years. The last factories employing large numbers of workers left in 2004 and 2005, when Maytag and Butler pulled up stakes. Those companies were the end of a trend.. Ferguson said the report commissioned by the Health Department revealed that the population loss was greater in the 1990s than from 2000-2010.

?Whatever problems that emerged from the Maytag and Butler closings were already here,? he said. ?That was more of a tipping point.?

Schmidt said the departure of the factories after all those years left another void.

?We?re dealing now with the consequences of several generations of people living in this area who didn?t have to be entrepreneurs,? Schmidt said. ?They were working for others, rather than for themselves.?

They were trained specifically for the jobs at the factories, which, for the most part, didn?t translate well into the jobs of today. Retraining thus became necessary.

From 2000-2008, Knox County had a net loss of about 5,000 jobs, with 4,139 of those in manufacturing. Some job categories, such as information technology and education-health, added jobs.

?The actual form of employment available in this area, the bones have been broken and are being reset,? Schmidt said of the changing job picture in the area.

Schmidt said there needs to be more discussion of the reasons for the area?s economic/poverty problems.

?I?m bothered by the fact we don?t talk about this enough,? he said.

Ferguson said the Healthy Communities study is a good place to start.

?Every elected official and people who care about these questions should try to get a hold of that? report, he said.

Schmidt said the Healthy Communities study identified strengths that can help with job attraction, such as affordable housing. He said there are many other factors needed to bring in more jobs, such as better broadband connection.

Help Wanted: Entrepreneurs

A year ago, GREDA pledged to help improve education here.

?We believe the improvement to Galesburg and Knoxville schools leads the framework to economic revival,? Schmidt said.

He said GREDA is trying to work more with the city, as well.

?The time is right for us to move in that direction,? Schmidt said. ?The city is on the right track. There?s now a re-emphasis on entrepreneurs, encouraging people to go back into the arena of taking risks themselves.?

The former president of Carl Sandburg College said the school can be a valuable resource.

?Sandburg has been rated among the top tech-savvy community colleges in the nations the last five to seven years,? he said. ?We have capital to produce young men and women and retrained adults to work in the area of IT.?

While jobs that pay more money are needed, the conclusion was there are many diverse issues to be addressed if poverty is to be reduced.

?Clearly our role is limited,? Ferguson added. ?None of us here (at GREDA) are social workers. It?s our obligation to try to convince owners of capital to risk it here.?

Microbial communities on skin affect humans' attractiveness to mosquitoes

Thursday, December 29, 2011

The microbes on your skin determine how attractive you are to mosquitoes, which may have important implications for malaria transmission and prevention, according to a study published Dec. 28 in the online journal PLoS ONE.

Without bacteria, human sweat is odorless to the human nose, so the microbial communities on the skin play a key role in producing each individual's specific body odor. The researchers, led by Niels Verhulst of Wageningen University in the Netherlands, conducted their experiments with the Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto mosquito, which plays an important role in malaria transmission. They found that individuals with a higher abundance but lower diversity of bacteria on their skin were more attractive to this particular mosquito. They speculate individuals with more diverse skin microbiota may host a selective group of bacteria that emits compounds to interfere with the normal attraction of mosquitoes to their human hosts, making these individuals less attractive, and therefore lower risk to contracting malaria. This finding may lead to the development of personalized methods for malaria prevention.

Avastin disappoints against ovarian cancer (AP)

Avastin, the blockbuster drug that just lost approval for treating breast cancer, now looks disappointing against ovarian cancer, too. Two studies found it did not improve survival for most of these patients and kept their disease from worsening for only a few months, with more side effects.

The Genentech drug won approval in Europe last week for advanced ovarian cancer. But its maker has no immediate plans to seek the same approval in the United States. After talking with the Food and Drug Administration, "we do not believe the data will support approval" although no final decision has been made, said Charlotte Arnold, a spokeswoman for Genentech, part of the Swiss company Roche.

Results of the studies are in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

In November, the FDA revoked Avastin's approval for breast cancer because it did not meaningfully extend life and can have serious side effects. Without approval, doctors can prescribe the drug but insurers may not pay. Treatment with it can cost $100,000 a year.

Avastin can still be sold for some colon, lung, kidney and brain cancers. The new research was aimed at adding ovarian cancer to the list.

One study, led by Dr. Robert Burger of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, involved nearly 1,900 women with advanced ovarian cancer given one of three treatment combinations. The time until the disease got worse was a median of 10 months in those given just chemotherapy; adding Avastin improved that by just one to four months for the other two groups.

Survival was similar among the groups, and side effects were higher among those on Avastin ? mostly high blood pressure but also some stomach and gut problems that needed treatment.

In the other study, led by researchers from England, more than 1,500 ovarian cancer patients were given chemo with or without Avastin. The drug kept cancer at bay just one to two months longer than chemo alone did, with more cases of high blood pressure. There was a trend toward improved survival for those on Avastin, but the difference was too small to say the drug was responsible.

Genentech helped pay for the studies and some of the researchers consult for the company.

Dr. Gary Lyman, a Duke University researcher who was on the FDA advisory panel that recommended revoking Avastin's approval for breast cancer, wrote in an email that he agreed with the company's decision not to seek approval for ovarian cancer.

"The situation is very similar" to the results in breast cancer, and approval is unlikely unless a biological marker or test can show which patients might benefit, he wrote.

About 220,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed each year around the world, and it causes 140,000 deaths. In the United States, the National Cancer Institute estimates 22,000 new cases and 15,000 deaths each year.

(AP) ? Werner Otto, the founder of the mail-order company that bears his name and a prominent figure in West Germany's post-World War II economic resurgence, has died. He was 102.

The company, Otto Group, said Tuesday that he died in Berlin on Dec. 21 in the presence of his family.

Otto opened a shoe factory in Hamburg in 1945, but it didn't last long in the face of tough competition from southern Germany.

So in 1949, with four employees, he turned to selling shoes by mail order ? the start of what became Otto Group, which now employs 50,000 people and has annual revenues of euro11.4 billion ($14.9 billion).

Its first, hand-produced, catalog appeared in 1950, offering 28 styles of shoes. The business then grew rapidly during the 1950s, expanding its range and establishing itself with the help of shoppers from outside major cities who didn't have ready access to stores; in 1963, Otto introduced telephone orders and went online in 1995.

Otto handed over the company's operational management in 1965 and founded another enterprise, ECE, which builds and manages shopping malls in Europe.

He also set up Paramount Group, Inc., to invest in U.S. real estate.

Otto dedicated himself to a range of social causes, including his Werner Otto Foundation, founded in 1969, which supports medical research.

Among other projects, his company said he also donated a new museum building to Harvard University, the Werner Otto Hall, to showcase expressionist art from the German-speaking world.

Otto was born in the eastern German town of Seelow on Aug. 13, 1909, the son of a merchant.

He is survived by his third wife, Maren, and his five children. His oldest son, Michael, is now Otto Group's supervisory board chairman and his youngest son, Alexander, is the chief executive of ECE.

Sky Sports Pundit Lauds Tottenham ?Powerhouse? Sandro

Jamie Redknapp has lavished praise on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Sandro following the Brazilian's impressive display at Carrow Road on Tuesday night.

The prodigiously gifted holding midfielder has had to bide his time at Tottenham this season after injuries curtailed his involvement earlier in the year.

The aforementioned Sky Sports pundit, who is also the son of Spurs' boss Harry Redknapp, believes the form of Scott Parker has inevitably inhibited Sandro's starts for Tottenham this season but he claims the towering 22-year-old is ideally suited to Premier League football.

Redknapp believes Sandro is now worthy of a starting berth at Tottenham and intimates the midfield trio of Parker, Modric and the Brazilian could prove a hugely potent asset as the north London Premier League club bid to sustain their title challenge.

"Sandro has had to be patient for his chances this season with Scott Parker in such outstanding form." Redknapp told the Daily mail, while discussing Tottenham's midfield Brazilian. "He hurt his knee playing for Brazil in the summer and then found himself out of the Spurs side.

Like us on Facebook

"He's a powerhouse of a player who is suited to the English game. He cuts out danger, gets around the pitch and could even play at centre half.

"He's tall, quick and strong, and will be a regular for his country. Spurs need to give him regular games. As last night showed, Parker, Luka Modric and Sandro work so well together." The former Spurs midfielder concluded.

Last night's victory ensured Tottenham maintained the pace behind joint leaders Manchester City and Manchester United. Harry Redknapp's side are just seven points behind and have a game in hand over their rivals.?

Compare Your Dental Payment History and Your Insurance Claim to Ensure You're Not Getting Double-Charged [Dentists]

Compare Your Dental Payment History and Your Insurance Claim to Ensure You're Not Getting Double-ChargedKeeping track of your insurance payouts can be difficult as it is, but Reddit user SpazMcMan points out an interesting facet of dental insurance you might not have considered: you may have unused credit from your insurance company if you pay part of your bill up front.

The basics are common with some insurance companies, here's how SpazMcMan explains it:

The insurance company pays based on a statement of work submitted by the dentist, and they may or may not know what you already paid, which is why they send you the claim information after it is paid. In case of an overpayment, the dentist is supposed to credit your account or give you a refund, but the point is the process isn't always automatic. If you know a dentist that does this, that's great. My point isn't that all dentists are crooked?my point is, it's your job to double check.

If you go to a dentist where you're doing co-pays at the time of service, that payment may not get communicated back to the insurance company. In effect, you may have a bit of credit on your account that nobody is noticing so it's good to compare the bill you get from your dentist at the time of service and the claim form you get later from your insurance company to make sure there was no overpayment. If there was an overpayment, you should call your dentist to check and make sure they have that information on file. Photo by Herry Lawford.

Black and white HTC Radar 4G Shows Up On Microsoft?s Website

White HTC Radar 4G was spotted on Microsoft?s website. This quite a little surprise since typically when the device first launch, it will come in black variant. However, in this case it seems the device striking the market with many?s fav color, white.

The funny thing is there?s no official words on the device black version. On top of that, we have not hear much regarding the Radar 4G specs.

(AP) ? Big changes are coming for the football programs at Missouri and North Carolina. Before they happen, there's one more football game to play.

The Tigers and Tar Heels meet on Monday in the Independence Bowl, and both teams have become quite experienced at juggling questions about their long-term future with the upcoming matchup. Players and coaches are adamant the focus will be squarely on the field.

"We're expecting to play our best game," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. "And we expect North Carolina to play their best game."

Not that there aren't reasons to be distracted. North Carolina (7-5) is in the midst of a coaching change, while Missouri (7-5) is preparing for its move to the Southeastern Conference after an acrimonious exit from the Big 12.

The Tar Heels endured more than their share of turmoil this season under interim head coach Everett Withers, who took over in July after Butch Davis was fired shortly before preseason camp in the shadow of an NCAA investigation.

Withers was a candidate for the full-time job until last week, when North Carolina announced the hiring of Southern Mississippi coach Larry Fedora. Fedora takes over the program immediately after the bowl game and Withers is headed to Ohio State, where he'll be the defensive coordinator for new coach Urban Meyer.

Withers' time is already divided. He said he spent part of his week making recruiting calls for the Buckeyes before turning his focus back to North Carolina.

He expects his team to handle any extra adversity without issues. The Tar Heels have certainly had plenty of practice.

"This has been an experience for all of us," Withers said. "Each player has done an unbelievable job of holding this together to have the success that we've had the past two years. It's been remarkable. I haven't looked at it as tumultuous. I've looked at it as a life lesson ? a journey ? that you go through."

Coaching stability isn't a problem at Missouri (7-5), where Pinkel is wrapping up his 11th season with a program-record seventh consecutive bowl appearance. Instead, it's the move to the SEC that's the constant topic of conversation.

"There's no question about it ? this is historically a big moment with us playing our last game in the Big 12," Pinkel said. "That's kind of on my shoulders and on our players' shoulders. This game is important for many reasons, but it will be remembered specifically for that reason."

While North Carolina and Missouri share a penchant for off-field issues, they also have similar on-field resumes.

Both are talented teams that have experienced bouts of success and failure. Missouri started the season with a 4-5 record before consecutive wins over Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas earned them the right to go to the Independence Bowl.

Missouri sophomore quarterback James Franklin has thrown for 2,733 yards and 20 touchdowns this season while also rushing for 839 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Tigers' defense has given up just 14 points per game during the recent three-game winning streak.

"It's been kind of an up-and-down year for us, so it'd be nice to end with four (wins) in a row and end our time in the Big 12 the way we want to," receiver T.J. Moe said. "And for the guys who are going to be here next season, it can be a springboard into the SEC."

North Carolina started the season 5-1, but stumbled down the stretch, losing four of the last six to finish with a 3-5 ACC record.

Still, the Tar Heels won their regular-season finale against Duke and have one of the best freshmen running backs in the country in Giovani Bernard.

The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder from Davie, Fla., rebounded from a torn knee ligament last season to become the program's first 1,000-yard rusher since 1997.

"You see the great running backs, and they're with the great teams," Bernard said. "That's the main thing. Dwight Jones has done a great job catching the ball all year and our offensive line has protected me and Bryn (Renner) amazingly this year. The credit goes out to those guys. I'm following the blocks. A little patience helps."

Renner, a sophomore, led the ACC in passing efficiency and has thrown for 2,769 yards, 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Renner said all of the team's adversity has taken a toll, but also made the Tar Heels resilient. Though disappointed Withers won't be around next season to coach the team, he said the Tar Heels are determined to send everyone out a winner.

"This coaching staff ? you can't say enough about the job coach Withers did for us all season," Renner said. "That's really who we're playing for. This staff and this team."

Pandigital Personal Scanner/Converter?5x7 PanScn04

The Pandigital Personal Scanner/Converter?5x7 PanScn04 ($99.99 direct) is one of about 10 scanners Pandigital sells that are basically variations on a theme, with some branded with the Pandigital name and others branded as Kodak. The models vary primarily in the maximum size photo each can scan and whether they can scan strips of film and slides as well as prints. The PanScn04 is one of two models that scans prints only but can scan at up to 5 by 7 inches, making it the obvious choice if your collection of photos includes 5 by 7 inch prints, and you don't need to scan film.

The PanScn04 is nearly identical to the Kodak P570 Personal Photo Scanner ($99.99 direct, 3 stars) that I recently reviewed. In fact, the two differ even less than the Pandigital Personal Photo & Negative Scanner/Converter PanScn05 ($109.99 direct, 4 stars) and it's near twin, the Kodak P460 Personal Photo Scanner ($99.99 direct, 4 stars). At least the PanScn05 and P460 come in different colors, one black and one white. The only obvious physical difference between the PanScn04 and the P570 is the name on the front panel.

This isn't to say that there aren't any differences at all. The PanScn05 comes with a 1GB memory card to scan to instead of the P570's 2GB card. It also comes without Kodak EasyShare, which is basically a photo album program. EasyShare includes commands to print, send to email, and send to Kodak's Creative Center, where you can order photo books, photo mugs, and other products with your photos on them, as well as turn your photos into greeting cards and other items you can print yourself.

Whether Kodak EasyShare comes with your scanner or not isn't much of a difference, however, given that you can download the program from Kodak for free. In every other way, the two scanners seem to be almost identical. I saw little to no difference for setup or scan quality, although I saw a slight difference in speed.

Setup and Scanning
The PanScn04 measures just 1.8 by 7.6 by 3.3 inches (HWD) and offers a 5-inch-wide manual-feed slot in the front with a straight-through path to the back. Setup consists of inserting the supplied 1GB memory card in the front slot and plugging in the power cable.

To scan, you turn the scanner on, optionally set the resolution using a button that toggles between 300 and 600 pixels per inch (ppi), put a photo in one of the two supplied protective sleeves, and insert the sleeve into the input slot. Everything else is automatic, with the scanner grabbing the photo, feeding it, and scanning it to a JPG file, automatically cropping and otherwise choosing settings.

After you finish scanning, you can move the files to your computer on the memory card or connect to your system with the supplied USB cable, wait for the computer to see the memory card as a USB drive, and copy the files. You can also optionally install a utility that will let you scan directly to your computer.

As with the P570, the PanScn04 comes without a photo editor. However, that's consistent with the emphasis on ease of use, since having a photo editor would mean having to invest some time in learning how to use it. The assumption is that you can use the built in tools in your operating system, like the Windows ability to manage, print, and, to some minor extent, edit photos.

Scan Speed
The PanScn04 shares the P570's ability to let you scan almost as fast as the scanner can go. This is usually not true for manual-feed scanners, because the timed speed doesn't include the extra time you'll spend preparing each original or carefully feeding it so it will go in straight.

The PanScn04 eliminates that extra time by coming with two protective sleeves. Start scanning with the photo inserted into one, and you'll have plenty of time to remove the photo from the other sleeve, put the photo away, insert a new photo in the sleeve, and have it ready when the first scan finishes. You'll need a little extra time to insert each photo, but that shouldn't be more than a second or two per photo.

In my tests, whether scanning to its memory card or to a computer, the PanScn04 took a consistent 15 to 17 seconds to scan at 600 ppi, and 15 to 16 seconds at 300 ppi. These times are essentially the same as for the P570 with one exception. Scanning to a computer at 600 ppi took almost twice as long for the P570, a result that was surprising enough so that I retested both scanners to confirm that I had the times right. There are several possible reasons for the difference, including both hardware and software issues, but Pandigital was unable to provide an explanation.

Also, to put these speeds in context, note that the P460 and PanScn05, which both use a smaller sleeve because of their 4 by 6 maximum scan size, took 10 seconds with the same photos at 300 ppi. Even so, the key point is that the PanScn05 is fast enough so it won't leave you feeling like your waiting for it.

Scan Quality
Scan quality, unfortunately, is a close match to the P570's quality, which means it shares the same limitations, with a loss of resolution that comes out as soft focus if you reprint the scans and a loss of both shadow detail (detail based on shading in dark areas) and detail based on shading in bright areas. As with the P570, however, the quality is good enough for casual photographers who just want to get their snapshots into digital format, and don't mind losing some quality in the process.

If you care more about good quality than ease of scanning, you should consider a flatbed scanner, like the Editors' Choice Epson Perfection V300 Photo ($99.99 direct, 4 stars). However, scanning with a flatbed is more cumbersome than using a sheet feeder. Lower quality is the tradeoff you get for the easier scanning. As with the Kodak P570, if you don't mind losing a little image quality and want an easy way to scan your 5- by 7-inch photos, the Pandigital Personal Scanner/Converter?5x7 PanScn04 can do the job, and it may well be the right scanner for your needs.

'Anonymous' hackers target US security think tank (AP)

LONDON ? The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

"Not so private and secret anymore?" the group taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.

"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.

Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.

It soon became clear that proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, and that the main threat was posed to individual employees.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with the names, addresses and account details.

"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the "A"s," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

It also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.

"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.

One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.

Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.

"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.

"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."

Stratfor said in an email to members that it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

"We have reason to believe that the names of our corporate subscribers have been posted on other web sites," said the email, passed on to The Associated Press by subscribers. "We are diligently investigating the extent to which subscriber information may have been obtained."

The email, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman, said the company is "working closely with law enforcement to identify who is behind the breach."

"Stratfor's relationship with its members and, in particular, the confidentiality of their subscriber information, are very important to Stratfor and me," Friedman wrote.

Repeated calls to Stratfor went unanswered Sunday and an answering machine thanked callers for contacting the "No. 1 source for global intelligence." Stratfor's website was down, with a banner saying "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told the AP in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think 'Why me?' I am not rich."

One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" news ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.

It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, as well as others in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

(AP) ? Xavier coach Chris Mack summed up the No. 14 Musketeers' latest post-brawl loss in a hurry.

"This was as disappointing a game for as long as I've been around," Mack said.

Hawaii relegated the reeling Musketeers to the seventh-place game in the Diamond Head Classic, rallying for an 84-82 overtime victory Friday night in the consolation semifinals.

Joston Thomas sent the Musketeers to their third straight loss since the bench-clearing brawl Dec. 10 against Cincinnati, making a layup from the baseline with 0.8 seconds left.

"I'm my mind, my heart I was thinking we're not losing," Thomas said. "No excuses. We have to pull through."

Down by 15 early in the second half of the consolation semifinal, Hawaii tied it at 77 on Hauns Brereton's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2.0 seconds left in regulation.

Thomas finished with a career-high 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting and had nine rebounds. Vander Joaquim added 20 points for Hawaii (6-5), Zane Johnson had 14 and Brereton 13.

The victory was Hawaii's first over a ranked team since it beat then-No. 4 Michigan State in November 2005.

"We struggled defensively in the second half," Mack said. "We're struggling offensively. We got some open looks we didn't knock down."

On the winning play, Johnson penetrated the lane before passing to Thomas, whose right-handed shot circled the rim before falling through. It wasn't the way Hawaii coach Gib Arnold planned it.

"We drew up a play where Zane comes off a screen and knocks down a jumper for us like he's done all season," said Thomas, describing the winning play. Instead, Johnson penetrated the lane before passing to Thomas, whose right-handed shot circled the rim before falling through.

A desperation heave by Xavier from about 75 feet as time expired was well short.

Tu Holloway led Xavier (8-3) with 26 points, Mark Lyons had 18 and Kenny Frease 13. Xavier has lost three straight for the first time under coach Mack.

Lyons played for the first time since the victory over Cincinnati. He was one of three Musketeers suspended for their parts in the altercation.

Holloway, who returned from his one-game suspension Thursday in a first-round loss to Long Beach State, was 4 of 8 from 3-point range and 7 of 16 overall. He also had six assists.

Holloway left the game briefly with an apparent right (shooting) hand injury early in the game.

Xavier opened the game on a 12-0 run and stretched the lead to 15 with 17:17 remaining in regulation.

"They jumped on us pretty good and I think we were down 15 in the second half," Arnold said. "This team has some character and we're finding out who we are. We're still figuring things out."

Johnson's 3-pointer pulled Hawaii to 75-74 with 3:10 to play, but Holloway answered for the Musketeers with a 3-pinter with 24 seconds. Brereton then hit his tying 3-pointer off an assist from Jeremiah Ostrowski.

Hawaii took its first lead on the first possession of overtime on Joaquim's dunk.

The Rainbow Warriors, who rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to Auburn on Thursday, will face Clemson in the fifth-place game Sunday. The Musketeers will play Southern Illinois for seventh place.

Britney Spears' Big 2011: From A Smash Album To A Ring On Her Finger

A decade into her career, the pop megastar reinvented herself this year as the ultimate Femme Fatale and made a big commitment to Jason Trawick.
By Jocelyn Vena

Maybe Britney Spears' lucky number is 30. The singer turned 30 this year, marking the landmark birthday on December 2 with a fan-voted MTV News tournament that crowned the Best Britney Video of All Time. But her 30th year also proved to be an incredibly successful period in her career.

For the first time in a while, she seemed comfortable being the pop megastar that she is. More than a decade into her career, Spears re-emerged as a Femme Fatale, giving fans a fist-pumping album, embarking on a flashy tour and dropping more memorable music videos. Britney Spears fandom was reenergized as the singer came out of her shell, opening up about this phase in her career as well her personal life in several high-profile interviews. So it's probably not surprising that Spears will cap off the year at #4 on MTV News' Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, just behind Lil Wayne.

"When I was younger, I was busy, busy, and I was always singing and dancing all the time. I was just really creative," she recalled in the MTV special "I Am the Femme Fatale." "That's when my mom realized I'm a really creative person."

She let that creativity shine over the past 12 months. From "Hold It Against Me" to "Till the World Ends" to her Chris Marrs Piliero-directed "I Wanna Go" and "Criminal," Britney made headlines every time she dropped a music video. But no vid stirred up as much controversy as her "Criminal" clip, which featured real-life boyfriend (now fiancé) Jason Trawick — and his abs.

"At the end of the day, Jason killed it," Piliero told MTV News of Trawick's cameo. "That was one of those things I was really stoked [about], as much as I went into it like, 'Wow, he's not an actor. This is going to be interesting,' but I really do like a challenge, and I really do like the idea that I'm a director and my job is to direct and get the performance. For me, it was a fun challenge to be like, 'I'm gonna make sure that you are awesome,' and he was."

Between video shoots, Spears hit the road with the likes of Nicki Minaj, Joe Jonas, and DJ Pauly D. Spears fully embraced her sensuality on the Femme Fatale Tour, a spectacular show full of costume changes, elaborate stage setups and stunning mini-films.

And while much of the 2011 VMA buzz was about Beyoncé's baby bump and Jo Calderone, Spears stole the spotlight by walking away with a Moonman for Best Pop Video and the prized Video Vanguard Award. She also had tongues wagging after an onstage kiss from Jo (a.k.a. Lady Gaga), just before she was honored with an electrifying dance tribute that highlighted some of biggest career moments.

"It was really crazy. I had no idea what to expect," Spears told us backstage at the VMAs. "The kids were amazing and so entertaining, and it was a really fun night. It was really cool. I was like, 'Wow, that's really sweet!' "

As 2011 came to a close, Spears wrapped up her tour, and MTV News threw her a birthday bash in the form of the "30 Videos for 30 Years" tournament. The competition was heated but in the end, Spears' iconic "I'm a Slave 4 U" took home the prize. And just when it seemed things couldn't get any better, Britney confirmed she was engaged to Trawick after dating for two years. She showed off her Neil Lane ring during a celebratory weekend in Las Vegas.

Jason Miller agrees with Dana White about his performance

Jason Miller agrees with Dana White about his performanceAfter Jason "Mayhem" Miller lost to Michael Bisping at "The Ultimate Fighter" season 14 finale earlier this month, he took a verbal beating from UFC president Dana White. He called it the worst stand-up and the most lopsided fight he has ever seen.

A disappointed Miller is now training in Holland, and responded to White's comments on his own website.

Dana White was right. He made some disparaging comments about my performance, and I agree with him. I displayed the worst of everything that night in the octagon. I was tense in round one and I locked up after that. I didn't perform to my potential, and I take full responsibility for it. That wasn't a UFC caliber performance, and I'm not happy about it.

After reading about Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira blame his loss on referee Herb Dean, it's refreshing to hear Miller take such responsibility for his loss. He also said that he is taking this loss as a challenge, and ended it with a little bit of an inspirational speech.

My challenge to you, and myself, is to continue to press on and make the most of your adventure here on earth. At the end of your life you want to be sure that you've made your best effort to make a collection of epic stories. Some sorrowful ones, some happy ones and some downright amazing, but the challenge for you is to find and make the most of each of these adventures.

That was the exact inspiration I needed to go finish my Christmas shopping.

The 10 Most-Influential Retailers of the Holiday Season Online (Mashable)

Amazon and Victoria's Secret are among the top retailers -- at least based on their Klout scores -- that are getting shoppers to talk about them or go to their sites this holiday season. Klout measured retailers' online influence on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn and Foursquare to determine the 10 retailers with the highest Klout scores. The graphic below, however, details just the retailers' Twitter activity from the past 90 days.

[More from Mashable: 5 iPhone Apps for Last-Minute Christmas Ecards [PICS]]

Amazon's score of 82 places them as the clear leader, while the nine others fall in the 70s range. The rankings exclude food retailers such as Starbucks and Whole Foods, which have scores of 78 and 75.

"Brands with high Klout scores have large, highly engaged audiences," Klout?s marketing manager Megan Berry told Mashable Tuesday. "The retweet and mentions stats give insight into a brand's social media activity -- a retailer like Amazon is more @mention based, while a brand like ThinkGeek is much more retweet heavy, indicating that they are putting out great content that their audience wants to share."

[More from Mashable: Study: Happiness Is Trending Down on Twitter [VIDEO]]

While the graphic lists the number of retweets and mentions each retailer is attracting on Twitter, Klout also looked at the the number of unique retweeters and unique people mentioning the retailers to find out whether the brands are reaching new audiences and whether those people are influential themselves.

Looking ahead to 2012, Klout is still building scoring models for seven more services that have already been integrated onto Klout users' dashboards. Klout also plans to add Quora, Yelp, Posterous, Livefyre, Disqus, bit.ly and other services.

Which brands have you been buzzing about this holiday season? Sound off in the comments.

"Batman" star roughed up in bid to visit blind Chinese activist (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Actor Christian Bale was roughed up by Chinese security guards as he attempted to visit a blind legal activist whose detention has sparked a domestic and international outcry, CNN reported on Friday.

Bale, who plays crime-fighting superhero Batman, and a camera crew from CNN were jostled by men in plainclothes in Dongshigu village in eastern Shandong province, where activist Chen Guangcheng has been under house arrest for 15 months, according to a video released by CNN on its website.

"Why can I not visit this man?" Bale asked several security officers, while they were pushing him.

"You know, I'm not being brave doing this," Bale told CNN. "The local people who are standing up to the authorities and insisting on going to visit Chen and his family and getting beaten up for it, and my understanding, getting detained for it and everything. I want to support what they are doing."

CNN said the guards shadowed its van for more than half an hour.

The fate of Chen, a self-schooled advocate who has campaigned against forced abortions, has become a test of wills, pitting the Communist Party's crackdown on dissent against activists championing his cause and that of artist Ai Weiwei.

In recent months, dozens of supporters have been blocked from visiting Chen. Many were beaten by men in plain clothes.

CNN said that Bale, in China for the premiere of his latest film "The Flowers of War" made by Chinese director Zhang Yimou, approached the news network to try to meet Chen.

They took an eight-hour car journey to Chen's village from Beijing.

"This doesn't come naturally to me," Bale said to CNN. "But this was just a situation, I said, I can't look the other way."

China's Foreign Ministry did not respond to a faxed inquiry about Bale's visit.

It was not clear if the incident would have any impact on "The Flowers of War," which is China's Oscar entry for next year, or the release of Bale's new Batman film in the country.

China's film regulator, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, did not answer telephone calls seeking comment.

"INTRINSIC WEAKNESS"

In a later interview with CNN, Bale said: "It's amazing that a superpower like China is actually terrified of this man and shows such an intrinsic weakness within the fabric of the country."

"This kind of treatment ... represents the power structure and their attitudes towards their own citizens, which is disgusting," he said.

Internet users took to the Twitter-like microblogging service Weibo to applaud Bale's visit to see the "blind man." Authorities have blocked searches for "Chen Guangcheng."

"Mr Bale, I admire your courage and heart," said a microblogger called "Chen Xiaoying wants to support."

"But next time if you want to save a person, remember to wear your Batman suit. The Chinese official media will not report this, it's up to CNN to broadcast it."

Chen angered Shandong officials in 2005 by exposing a program of forced abortions as part of China's one-child policy. He was formally released in September 2010 after four years in jail on a charge of "blocking traffic."

"What I really wanted to do is to shake the man's hand and say 'thank you', and tell him what an inspiration he is," Bale told CNN.

Other Hollywood stars have also been active in criticizing Chinese policies. Actor Richard Gere is a strong supporter of Tibet, for example.

China does not take kindly to foreign criticism of its rights record. In 2008, Icelandic singer Bjork shouted "Tibet! Tibet!" at a Shanghai concert after performing her song "Declare Independence," angering the government and local fans alike.

As a young boy, Bale starred in "Empire of the Sun," a film set in World War Two about a British family in Shanghai.

Brad Burnham Explains Why SOPA Must Be Stopped

The Congressional Judiciary committee is debating a bill today called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) which nobody in the Internet industry wants to see passed. Not surprisingly, the bill was written by lobbyists for the music and movie industries, who are frustrated by their inability to go after foreign sites filled with pirated material. The piracy problem is real, but the proposed solutions in the form of this bill and the Senate's corresponding Protect-IP Act (PIPA) will create more problems than they solve. Brad Burnham, a managing partner at Union Square Ventures, came into the TCTV studio in New York City to explain why SOPA is misguided and how it threatens to break the internet.

Take Vacations When You're in the Middle of a Project, Not When You're Finished [Vacation]

Take Vacations When You're in the Middle of a Project, Not When You're FinishedConventional wisdom dictates that the best time to take a vacation is after you've finished a project, and you can relax with a clear head. Stepcase Lifehack explains that this isn't always best: in fact, you're better off taking vacations in the middle of that big project, when you're feeling discouraged.

Finishing a project, they say, gives you momentum. Having a "win" under your belt motivates you to keep going strong, and taking a vacation can kill all the benefits that success brought you. Instead, they say, you should take those vacations when you're mentally tired and really need it:

Entrepreneurs don't need vacations to stay motivated, but we do need to manage our energy level, and vacations are a big part of that; it's important for us to take breaks, breath some fresh air, and get some perspective on what we're doing. In other words, even though we don't need vacations as rewards, they're great for resting and recharging?just so long as we don't take one at a time that will take away our momentum, or kill an opportunity.

For an entrepreneur (or anyone who is in charge of their own income), vacations don't come when projects are complete. On the contrary ? they should come when the projects are still in progress, but you're tired, and need to recharge to carry the ball the rest of the way.

Take Vacations When You're in the Middle of a Project, Not When You're FinishedSee the diagram to the right for an example of what they say this would look like. It's obviously a bit more complicated than that, but it's a fairly interesting philosophy. Hit the link to read more, and if you've had any experience with this, let us know about your optimal vacation time in the comments.

Beijing, Washington closely watch Taiwan polls (AP)

TAIPEI, Taiwan ? Taiwan's two leading presidential candidates have much in common: both are products of prestigious foreign universities, both come from well-established families, and neither is particularly charismatic.

But that's where the similarities end. Incumbent Ma ying-jeou wants Taiwan to move closer to China while contender Tsai Ing-wen refuses to accept China's claim over the democratic island.

As the final month of campaigning began Thursday, their neck-and-neck race will be closely watched by Beijing and Washington even though the Jan. 14 poll has so far revolved mostly around domestic economic issues.

"It's basically coming down to choosing the lesser of two evils," said Taipei teacher Stanley Ho, 47. He said he has yet to make up his mind, largely because he can't get too excited about either.

Chinese and American interest is keyed to the question of whether Ma will be able to continue his signature China policy, which in the past 3 1/2 years has lowered tensions across the 100-mile- (160-kilometer-) wide Taiwan Strait to their lowest level since the Taiwan and the mainland split amid civil war in 1949.

Ma's main emphasis has been on tying Taiwan's high-tech economy ever closer to China's lucrative markets, mostly through a series of ambitious initiatives including a far-reaching tariff slashing agreement, and the launching of hundreds of weekly cross-strait flights.

This has delighted Beijing, which sees in Ma its best hope of promoting its long held policy of bringing Taiwan under its control, not least because of his declared willingness to consider entering into political talks if he is re-elected.

It has also pleased the United States, because it regards a continuation of good cross-strait ties as a key to regional peace and economic development.

In the current race, Beijing clearly favors Ma, while the U.S. says it is neutral. However, some senior officials in the Obama administration appear to share Beijing's anti-Tsai bias, despite her repeated efforts to take a moderate stance on the China issue and distance herself from the robust support for formal Taiwanese independence that has characterized her Democratic Progressive Party in the past.

Recent opinion polls say the race is a virtual dead heat.

Ma, 61, who has a Harvard law degree, had a solid, if not altogether distinguished, record as justice minister and mayor of Taipei, and a somewhat remote personality that makes it difficult for him to connect with people outside his inner circle. His father was a mid-level official in the Nationalist Party that Ma now heads.

Tsai, 55, the scion of a wealthy family from southern Taiwan, was educated at Cornell University in New York state and the London School of Economics. She has served as the head of the government agency that oversees dealings with mainland China and as a vice-premier in the previous government. She acknowledges having some difficulty in unleashing the passion in DPP supporters that many take as their due.

"I voted for the DPP last time but this time I'm not too sure," said Jason Lin, a 36-year-old engineer from the southern city of Kaohsiung. "In the end I think it will come down to whoever I think will handle the economy better. For me, the economy is the main issue."

Early on in the campaign Ma stumbled over his assertion that he might work toward the signing of a peace treaty with Beijing if re-elected. That alarmed many Taiwanese voters, the majority of whom are enthusiastic about closer economic relations with Beijing, but want no part of a formal political relationship, because they fear it would undermine their hard-won democratic freedoms.

Ma has also come under attack for his economic policies, which Tsai alleges have spurred income inequality, and made it difficult for young Taiwanese to afford decent housing.

But Ma has hit back forcefully, insisting that a Tsai victory would lead to a resurgence of the cross-strait tensions that proliferated during the eight-year presidency of Ma predecessor Chen Shui-bian, the disgraced DPP politician who is currently serving a lengthy prison term after his conviction on corruption charges.

Ma's Nationalist backers also raised questions about Tsai's own probity, alleging that she profited from her interest in a biotech company that she allegedly helped establish while serving as vice-premier under Chen.

But after a DPP-initiated analysis of company documents, a senior Ma official was forced to acknowledge that that the date on a key document had been in error and Tsai's connection to the company began only after she left government service. The DPP labeled the error a deliberate forgery and called for Ma to apologize.

The case took a further turn on Wednesday after prosecutors announced they were looking into the company's formation, a move the DPP immediately slammed as a transparent attempt to enlist the machinery of government to undermine Tsai.
