Sifteo Cubes go next-generation, square gaming gets more portable (update)

Sifteo Cubes

It's hard to believe, but Sifteo's interactive gaming Cubes first went on sale just over a year ago. Fast forward to the present, and the company has unveiled version two of the the MIT-born blocks. If you'll recall, the 1.7-inch squares let you play interactive table-top games, each featuring a 1.5-inch LCD screen, motion sensing and wireless connectivity. With this next-gen variant, Sifteo's improved the graphics, added capacitive touch to the screen (the original acted like a physical button) and doubled the amount of Cubes that can interact at once to 12. The V2 Cubes also come packed with a dedicated, AAA-powered, wireless base station / speaker that stores your titles, sparing the need for a computer to play as was the case with the originals -- an onboard USB allows downloaded files to be transferred from your computers. Developers looking to create content for the device will also pleased to know that Sifteo's releasing its next SDK on October 1st.

Ready for some tangibly-cute Cube gameplay? Pre-orders begin today at Sifteo's website, priced at $130 for 3 Cubes with a base station and five games, and $30 for each additional cube. They're set to ship in November, so in the meantime you'll find details in the video demo and press release after the break.

Update: For those curious, we've learned that the original Cubes are not compatible with the new ones, but Sifteo has emailed owners with a $50 voucher that they can use toward upgrading. Furthemore

Published High-Tech Nursery Article ? A Detailed House

With my background in technology, most assume that I advocate gadgets and technology wherever and whenever possible?but that?s actually not the case. Maybe because of my background, I know the extreme mark-ups in prices and bugs that invariably happen with the first few releases.

I think the reporter that contacted me for this piece thought that I would be on the ?pro? technology side, but if you read my post,?Interview: High-Tech Nurseries, you saw what my answers were to her questions. So, I wanted to see what you all thought of the article:

As high-tech devices become a part of everyday life, the nursery is the newest frontier

Picture a room with high-definition security cameras, a chair with vibration and motion settings and a surround-sound system.

Not thinking about a baby?s nursery? Most people wouldn?t.

But as each generation becomes more technologically connected, it?s inevitable that tech devices will soon become essential to the baby?s room. These new systems aim to make parents? lives easier, while encouraging a child?s healthy development.

Following the trend of ?smart? appliances, French technology company Withings has a smart baby scale that connects to the Internet, allowing parents to access their child?s weight from a smart phone or any Web-enabled device and share the infant?s progress with family, friends or the pediatrician.

Transportation is another growing area for baby tech. Pittsburgh-based 4Moms offers a futuristic-looking stroller, named the Origami because it can fold and unfold at the touch of a button. Not only does the battery-operated contraption charge itself (and your MP3 player), it has an LCD dashboard for active parents who wants to know how fast and far they?ve gone.

Another tech marvel for parents is the ability to accurately replicate the sound and gentle vibration of a car ? some would even consider it the holy grail.

Veteran parents know a leisurely drive is an almost sure-fire way to put a colicky baby to sleep. Fisher-Price offers its own car-ride motion infant seat, the Cruisin? Motion Soother. Another option is a smaller device from Sleep Tight, which vibrates and sounds like a car ride and can be attached to the baby?s crib.

And home theater isn?t just for the family room anymore. Some parents are opting to play lullabies through surround sound speakers in the walls. Others have foregone traditional baby monitors in favor of intricate security cameras broadcasting images to another room, or even another building for working parents who want to monitor caretakers.

All this tech-talk might seem incompatible with nurseries, which are generally soft, warm places decorated in whites and pastels. For parents who desire this traditional style but still want the convenience of new technology, striking a balance is essential.

?Traditional style is still very popular, especially among my clients seeking a nostalgic feel for their nurseries to provide a soothing atmosphere for their baby and to inspire their own memories from childhood,? says Sherri Blum of Jack and Jill Interiors in Harrisburg, Pa. ?It?s very important for the manufacturers of these devices to make them blend into the surroundings as well as possible.?

In some cases, that means the gadget needs to be hidden or inconspicuous. Cloud B, for instance, has a device that hides inside a plush monkey that plays a parent?s recorded personalized message over relaxing sounds.

One of the downsides of technology, of course, is cost. The Origami stroller?s suggested retail price of $849 might give pause to a new mom on unpaid maternity leave.

Kearney of Northern Virginia spent years in management positions for technology companies before becoming a stay-at-home mom. She now writes ?A Detailed House,? a blog about interior design and home improvement.

Technology can enrich parents and babies alike, she says.

?My first baby had reflux and, prior to her diagnosis, cried unless I was holding her,? she says. ?It was grueling, especially while recovering from a C-section, but an indoor infant seat that vibrated saved me.

?Prior to the advent of these products, my mother used to drive me in a car, and I?ve heard of mothers unwisely putting an infant seat on washing machines or dryers to emulate the soothing motion. If a product gives a parent any advantage, absolutely take it,? she suggests.

At the same time, tread cautiously. Don?t buy gadgets haphazardly without considering how much use they?ll actually be.

Blum says, ?Talk to parents with toddlers who have already been through the sleepless nights and have tried various items.?

Kearney also advocates low-tech or ?classic? toys that can stimulate a baby?s creativity and imagination and help develop important cognitive skills just as much as the high-tech gadgets, she says.

?The good high-tech toys and products are developed with input from educators and doctors to aid in a baby?s mental development and are not merely electronic babysitters,? Kearney says. ?I think, as with anything, parents need to find what balance works for them.?

~~~
With interviews, you can?t always bank on what quote they are going to pull; there were other things I said that I wish were included in the article, but, oh well! I have been asked to write some articles, so I will have more control over the content, and I will post them here first :-)
Ironically, I?ve been interviewed by many different media sources now and I?ve never contacted them, but my own hometown newspaper (I mean the tiny, local one, not a big one!) hasn?t and I actually contacted them! WTH?? Geesh!
Well, that?s all I have?I hope everyone is well and enjoying the day :-)
Voices from the right: Best quotes from the Republican convention
TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - "College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life. ... If you're feeling left out or passed by, you have not failed, your leaders have failed you."
- Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan
"We're a full generation apart, Governor Romney and I. And, in some ways, we're a little different. There are the songs on his iPod which I've heard on the campaign bus and on many hotel elevators. He actually urged me to play some of these songs at campaign rallies. I said, 'I hope it's not a deal-breaker Mitt, but my playlist starts with AC/DC and ends with Zeppelin.'"
- Ryan
"The demographics race, we're losing badly. We're not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term."
- South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, on the dangers Republicans face if they cannot appeal to more minorities at a time when white voters are a decreasing part of the electorate.
"I read somewhere that Mitt and I have a 'storybook marriage.' Well, in the story books I read, there were never long, long, rainy winter afternoons in a house with five boys screaming at once. And those story books never seemed to have chapters called MS or breast cancer. A storybook marriage? No, not at all. What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage."
- Ann Romney
"I can't tell you what will happen over the next four years. But I can only stand here tonight, as a wife, a mother, a grandmother, an American, and make you this solemn commitment: This man will not fail. This man will not let us down. This man will lift up America."
- Ann Romney, on her husband
"I said tonight I wanted to talk to you about love."
-Ann Romney
"I believe we have become paralyzed by our desire to be loved. ... Tonight, we choose respect over love. We are not afraid. We are taking our country back."
- New Jersey Governor Chris Christie
"Before I ran for district attorney, two Republicans invited my husband and me to lunch. And I know a party switch was exactly what they wanted. So, I told Chuck, we'll be polite, enjoy a free lunch and then say goodbye. But we talked about issues. They never used the words Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal. We talked about many issues, like welfare - is it a way of life or a hand up? And when we left that lunch, we got in the car, and I looked over at Chuck and said, 'I'll be damned, we're Republicans.'"
-New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, a former Democrat
"Folks, let me tell you this, (Democratic Vice President) Joe Biden disputes a lot of those facts, but Joe Biden told me that he was a good golfer. And I've played golf with Joe Biden. I can tell you that's not true."
- Ohio Governor John Kasich
The Republican convention is a chance for Mitt Romney to prove that he is not "a plutocrat married to a known equestrian."
- Former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, on how Romney needs to show that he is not out of touch with the needs of the middle class,
"We are not better off than we were four years ago, and no rhetoric, bumper sticker or campaign ad can change that. Mr. President, I am here to tell you we are not buying what you are selling in 2012."
- Mia Love, mayor of Sarasota Springs, Utah
Sudan rebels call for aid through S. Sudan, Ethiopia
Rebels in Sudan's war-torn South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, where hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by fighting, called Wednesday for aid to be sent in through South Sudan and Ethiopia.
The request -- which the rebels said they will formally make next week -- comes as an international aid plan falls behind schedule despite warnings about the humanitarian situation in the two states along Sudan's southern border.
"We will ask for the cross-border operation from South Sudan and Ethiopia," Arnu Ngutulu Lodi, spokesman for the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), told AFP.
He said the Sudanese government "is not respecting" a memorandum of understanding signed on August 5.
A ruling party official in Khartoum, however, insisted the government is committed to providing humanitarian assistance to all those affected by the war.
Both the government and rebels signed similar memorandums with the African Union, Arab League and UN to allow for humanitarian access throughout South Kordofan and Blue Nile -- including in rebel-held areas.
The signing came six months after the three organisations submitted their proposal to Khartoum.
The UN has expressed concern for months about a worsening humanitarian situation in the war zone, where Khartoum cited security concerns in tightly restricting the operations of foreign aid agencies.
Lodi accused the government of "delaying tactics" and said the rebels would officially request the cross-border operation at a meeting between the signatories next Tuesday.
He said the rebels are still "committed to the MOU" and to working with the three foreign organisations.
Ali Adam, a director general of Sudan's Humanitarian Aid Commission, confirmed on Monday that implementation of the memorandum was behind schedule. He said the required planning meetings had not yet occurred.
"Our duty and our responsibility is to provide aid to our people in South Kordofan and Blue Nile," Rabbie Abdelatti Ebaid, a senior official of the ruling National Congress Party, told AFP. "Each and every and all support will be provided by our government."
Under the memorandum reached between Khartoum, the UN, AU and Arab League, the "entire humanitarian operations" are to be under Sudanese government supervision.
A United Nations source said the UN "has to respect the sovereignty of nation states" and could not enter a country without its permission.
But the source, declining to be named, said the UN "does understand why some humanitarian organisations, seeing what is happening... may wish to pursue" a cross-border operation.
"We will continue to work with the government to facilitate humanitarian assistance into SPLM-North areas under the memorandum of understanding that was signed with the tripartite," the UN source told AFP.
Ethnic minority insurgents of the SPLM-N were allies of southern rebels during Sudan's 22-year civil war, which ended in a 2005 peace deal and South Sudan's independence in July last year.
Sudan accuses South Sudan of supporting the SPLM-N, a charge which analysts believe despite denials by the government in Juba.
"We are not acknowledging the so-called northern sector of SPLM," Ebaid said.
The UN says more than 650,000 people have been displaced or severely affected by the fighting in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, where related conflicts began in June and September last year.
Government figures showed that more than 8,700 were uprooted in the latest fighting which continued this week around Al Moreib village in northeastern South Kordofan.
The rebels said on Friday that the government "campaign" against civilian areas aimed to stymie the international aid plan.
In total, more than 160,000 refugees have fled to South Sudan from South Kordofan and Blue Nile, the UN says.
In mid-August, the UN's World Food Programme began rare air drops of food to the refugees in South Sudan, calling the move "a sign of the increasing urgency" with much of the area inaccessible because of flooding.
Having Serious With Personal Financing Budgeting. ? Want Articles?
As well as noticed that no matter what quantity of money you make in monthly, there is never adequate?
You most likely understand how much you earned last month, but do you discover how much you spent? If you dont, you are not the only one who doesn?t. According to survey, most people spend 10% a lot more than they make!
Why is it tough to track spending?
It is difficult for people to track their spending and whether it?s wise or not simply because they cannot decifer between requirements and wants. This is one on the biggest hindrance towards getting into practice good private finance budgeting.
You may need items in life including foodstuff, water, shelter and clothing. Needs are those stuff we cannot live without. Needs are also those who living without would case difficulties and distress. Knowing between needs and wants is essential since your perception will determine whether you spend your money on this or not.
Advertising is so powerful these days that you might think of luxuriuos goods as ?needs? when in fact you dont actually need them. These deceiving commercials upon TV greatly influence the purchasing and personal financial budgeting behavior. It is your job to manufacture a wise decision whether every new product is something you really need in addition to cannot live without. Some things may help to make life easier and equal to the quality of life you are living, but it is more imperative that you know whether you can certainly truly afford them or maybe not.
After learning between desires and wants put whatever you have learned into train. Here is a simple spending system that will greatly help your personalized finance budgeting:
- Create a personal finance budget which you can use
- Save 10% of one?s income
- Always know just how much you have left to shell out
- Instantly know the impact of any spending decision
- Track all ones purchases
- Pay your bills by the due date
- Effectively manage credit card spending
Many people create a financial budget according to other people financial worksheets. As much as it?s good to have some sort of reference, do not forget to generate it personal. Customize your personal finance budget as outlined by your expenditures. You are the only one who will refer to it each day so go ahead and help it become your own. This way, it will also look more familiar to you.
Many people purchase items with charge card more often than they will with cash. Always remember that marketing and advertising to buy items with cash since you are already free from obligations later on. Some people may forget that a card does not do magic along with a real bill comes at the conclusion of the month ? exacerbating your long list of bills.
The key is to have patience at the same time of the creation and maintenance of one?s personal finance budgeting listing. It takes time to verify information on expenditures and income to ensure nothing is missed. Also the accuracy of information is amongst the most important factors to produce a personal finance budget that really works.
In your personal finance budgeting, always remember the consequences of one?s spending. If you are about to spend your savings today on a single thing, remember that this becomes money that?s no longer available should you need it in the actual nearest future.
In 2005 the You. S. was implemented with completely new bankruptcy laws that handed congress. Before that time, filing for chapter 7 bankruptcies was an easy way out of financial responsibilities.
Many people spent years being careless using credit and debts because it can be fixed with a fast filing for bankruptcy.
Now that the regulation has changed, there are more rules for filing a section 7. Before the 2005 modification, filers could choose which code they wished to file under. Income did not issue.
One of the main changes is that now those with a higher income will have to file under chapter 13 and therefore pay off some of the incurred debt. The law also charged new restrictions on chapter 7 lawyers. It may be tougher now to get a lawyer who will represent you in the bankruptcy case.
In addition to the modern income restrictions, there is also necessary counseling that debtors must complete before and after filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy.
Pre-filing, individuals must complete credit counseling and post-filing, they must complete economic budgeting. These should have also been implemented years before. They are designed to hold people aware of their own spending and keep them on track.
Gravitational waves, much like the recently discovered Higgs boson, are notoriously difficult to observe. Scientists first detected these ripples in the fabric of space-time indirectly, using radio signals from a pulsar-neutron star binary system. The find, which required exquisitely accurate timing of the radio signals, garnered its discoverers a Nobel Prize. Now a team of astronomers has detected the same effect at optical wavelengths, in light from a pair of eclipsing white dwarf stars.
"This result marks one of the cleanest and strongest detections of the effect of gravitational waves," said team member Warren Brown of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO).
The team discovered the white dwarf pair last year. (White dwarfs are the remnant cores of stars like our Sun.) The system, called SDSS J065133.338+284423.37 (J0651 for short), contains two white dwarf stars so close together -- one-third of the Earth-moon distance -- that they make a complete orbit in less than 13 minutes.
"Every six minutes the stars in J0651 eclipse each other as seen from Earth, which makes for an unparalleled and accurate clock some 3,000 light-years away," said study lead author J.J. Hermes, a graduate student working with Professor Don Winget at The University of Texas at Austin.
Einstein's theory of general relativity predicts that moving objects create subtle ripples in the fabric of space-time, called gravitational waves. Gravitational waves should carry away energy, causing the stars to inch closer together and orbit each other faster and faster. The team was able to detect this effect in J0651.
"Compared to April 2011, when we discovered this object, the eclipses now happen six seconds sooner than expected," said team member Mukremin Kilic of The University of Oklahoma.
"This is a general relativistic effect you could measure with a wrist watch," added SAO's Warren Brown.
J0651 will provide an opportunity to compare future direct, space-based detection of gravitational waves with those inferred from the orbital decay, providing important benchmark tests of our understanding of the workings of gravity.
The team expects that the period will shrink more and more each year, with eclipses happening more than 20 seconds sooner than otherwise expected by May 2013. The stars will eventually merge, in two million years. Future observations will continue to measure the orbital decay of this system, and attempt to understand how tides affect the merger of such stars.
Worker turnout plunges at S.African mine ahead of talks
Worker turnout at platinum giant Lonmin's strike-hit South African mine plummeted Tuesday as hopes shifted to mediated talks to break a deadlock that has seen 44 people killed.
The London-listed firm said only eight percent of its 28,000 staff had reported for work, amid fresh reports of threats from striking miners against returning workers ahead of government-brokered talks on Wednesday.
"The outcome of the meeting will determine whether the strike continues or it ends. Again the issue of our salary demands will be raised," said Zolani Bodlani, a representative of the striking workers.
Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant expressed optimism that a deal would be found, after holding afternoon talks with representatives of the non-unionised strikers who have refused to call off a wildcat boycott until the world's number three platinum producer meets their wage demands.
"The meeting was fruitful. I think tomorrow we will resolve the issue," Oliphant was quoted by the Sapa news agency as saying.
On Wednesday, Oliphant will lead talks between unions, mine management and worker representatives to try broker a "peace accord" in the deadly stand-off that sparked the country's deadliest day of police violence since apartheid.
"We're hoping for the stabilisation and the resolution of the stalemate in Marikana, that's the essence really," her spokesman Musa Zondi told AFP.
A heavy police presence was visible around the mining area Tuesday with officers in five armoured trucks monitoring a group of striking miners who again gathered near the spot where police gunned down 34 people on August 16.
The shooting pushed the death toll to 44 after 10 people were killed in clashes blamed on inter-union rivalry that shut down production.
Striking workers have vowed to act on colleagues who return to work, sending attendance plunging to eight percent Tuesday from 13 percent on Monday and more than 50 percent at the weekend.
"There are unsubstantiated reports of intimidation in two mining areas," said the company.
"No incidents of violence have been reported. Management is appealing to all stakeholders to remain calm."
As armed private security guards manned the gates and patrolled the mine grounds Tuesday, police conducted random body searches outside the mine hostel and the informal settlement where the majority of the workers live.
"We've maintained our force and our visibility," said police spokesman Dennis Adriao, who would not give the number of police deployed.
Representatives of the striking miners, who are acting independently of unions, said they will attend the talks on Wednesday after meeting the labour minister.
"We were allowed to represent ourselves and all other unions will be present. We don't want any decisions to be taken on our behalf, so that is why we agreed to the meeting," said Bodlani.
Workers, who claim they earn 4,000 rand a month, are demanding 12,500 rand (1,190 euros, $1,490). Lonmin says the workers already earn around 10,000 rand when bonuses and other compensation are included.
Lonmin has urged all parties to take part in the mediated talks, and said an agreement would pave the way for negotiations on the crunch issue of wages which led rock drill operators to first down tools on August 10.
"The signing of a peace accord is considered the first step of the resolution process and will provide all parties with a framework within which agenda items -- such as wages -- can be discussed," the company said.
"Management encourages all parties to participate in the peace accord meeting so that we can stabilise our situation and move forward."
De Jong warns sloppy City to tighten up
Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong has warned his side they must shore up their leaky defence before they can think about mounting a sustained bid to retain the Premier League title.
City needed a late Carlos Tevez equaliser to rescue a 2-2 draw at Liverpool on Sunday after Roberto Mancini's side allowed the hosts to take the lead twice.
It was the third successive match this season that City have conceded two goals after their 3-2 wins over Chelsea in the Community Shield and Southampton on the opening day of the league campaign.
They also conceded twice before coming from behind to beat QPR, and win the title in the process, on the final day of last season and Netherlands international de Jong knows that kind of porous defensive record will prove eventually fatal unless it is rectified.
"I don't know what it is. It is a bad habit," de Jong told City TV.
"We picked that up from the last game of the season against QPR and have continued that in these first two games of the new season.
"We have to improve and show that we are up for the test wherever we go, away or at home.
"We have a lot of qualities in the squad but we just have to improve.
"It is not going to be an easy season. Wherever you go everyone wants to beat the champions. We have to stand tall with each other and improve."
Margaret Paul, Ph.D.: 'Don't I Have a Right to Be Angry?'
I frequently hear this question from my counseling clients: "Don't I have a right to be angry? I have been betrayed (or hurt) and it seems to me that I certainly have a right to be angry in this situation."
My answer is, "Yes, of course you have the right. But what's the point? Is your anger working for you to get you what you want?"
We always have the right to feel whatever we feel. We also have the right to express anger when we feel hurt or betrayed. However, the real question is not whether you have the right, but whether or not your anger is working for you.
Samantha asked this same question in her first Skype session with me. Over two years ago, Samantha had discovered that Brad, her husband of 12 years, had been having numerous affairs. She was devastated, and her response was anger. Two years later she was still angry, and even though Brad had been in therapy for sexual addiction and was no longer having affairs, she was miserable.
"Samantha, what are you hoping for by being angry?"
"I want Brad to feel REALLY awful about what he did so I can be sure he will never do it again."
"So you are punishing him, hoping to have control over him?"
"Yes, I guess that's what I'm doing. I don't want to be hurt like that ever again."
"Since you can't be certain he will never do this again, why have you decided to stay in the relationship?"
"I love him and we have two children."
"So the purpose of your anger is to control him and protect you from feeling your heartbreak and helplessness over him?"
"Well what should I do? Just forgive and act like nothing happened?"
"Samantha, is what you are doing making you happy? Is it bringing you joy? Is it healing your marriage?"
"No, I feel awful most of the time."
"The fact is that this happened, and you can't make it not have happened. And it was heartbreaking for you. You actually have only two viable choices if you want to feel better: You need to accept that Brad did this and is attempting to heal his underlying issues, or you need to get a divorce. The only way you can truly accept it is to stop taking his behavior personally, and learn to manage your feelings of heartbreak and helplessness over him. Anger is generally a cover-up feeling -- covering over deeper, painful feelings such as heartbreak and helplessness over others."
"How can I not take it personally? He did this to me."
"No, he did it out of his own fears, just as you are angry due to your fears. He abandoned himself by having affairs, and now he is learning and healing. You are abandoning yourself by trying to control him with your anger, and hopefully now you will also learn and heal. What would happen if you decided to not take his behavior personally?"
"I would still feel heartbroken."
"Yes, of course you would. And your heartbreak is stuck inside, being blocked and covered over by your anger. Right now, breathe into your heartbreak and let yourself fully feel it. Bring deep kindness, tenderness and compassion to your heartbreak."
Samantha started to sob deeply. I kept reminding her to be very gentle with herself. After awhile, the sobs subsided and Samantha looked relieved.
"How are you feeling now?"
"Better. I've needed to cry like that for a long time. I can see that the anger stopped the pain."
"Samantha, each time the heartbreak comes up, instead of getting angry and covering it up, bring compassion to this very painful feeling and let it release as you just did. How are you feeling about Brad right now?"
"I actually feel some compassion for him too. He had a devastating childhood with no love at all and I'm so glad he is working on his own healing now. He really is a good guy who made some bad mistakes and hurt both of us. And now I've been hurting him with my anger. I don't want to do that anymore."
"I'm very glad to hear that. Compassion for yourself and him will bring about healing, while anger will continue to hurt both of you. Are you willing to begin practicing compassion for yourself and him?"
"Yes!"
Samantha did practice compassion and things began to change between her and Brad. Eventually Brad joined us in conjoint Inner Bonding Skype sessions and was able to learn to have compassion for himself and Samantha. Brad saw that his affairs were a way of trying to get the love that he didn't receive as a child. He saw that he had been treating himself as his parents had treated him -- abandoning himself with much self-judgment, which resulted in his sexual addiction. Sex had become his way of avoiding feeling his painful feelings, just as anger had become Samantha's way of avoiding hers. As both Brad and Samantha learned to be move loving to themselves, they were better able to share their love with each other. Their marriage is healing.
Manipulating the microbiome could help manage weight
ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Vaccines and antibiotics may someday join caloric restriction or bariatric surgery as a way to regulate weight gain, according to a new study focused on the interactions between diet, the bacteria that live in the bowel, and the immune system.
Bacteria in the intestine play a crucial role in digestion. They provide enzymes necessary for the uptake of many nutrients, synthesize certain vitamins and boost absorption of energy from food. Fifty years ago, farmers learned that by tweaking the microbial mix in their livestock with low-dose oral antibiotics, they could accelerate weight gain. More recently, scientists found that mice raised in a germ-free environment, and thus lacking gut microbes, do not put on extra weight, even on a high-fat diet.
In a study, published Aug. 26 in the journal Nature Immunology, a research team based at the University of Chicago was able to unravel some of the mechanisms that regulate this weight gain. They focused on the relationship between the immune system, gut bacteria, digestion and obesity. They showed how weight gain requires not just caloric overload but also a delicate, adjustable -- and transmissible -- interplay between intestinal microbes and the immune response.
"Diet-induced obesity depends not just on calories ingested but also on the host's microbiome," said the study's senior author Yang-Xin Fu, MD, PhD, professor of pathology at the University of Chicago Medicine. For most people, he said, "host digestion is not completely efficient, but changes in the gut flora can raise or lower digestive efficiency."
So the old adage "you are what you eat" needs to be modified, Fu suggested, to include, "as processed by the microbial community of the distal gut and as regulated by the immune system."
To measure the effects of microbes and immunity, the researchers compared normal mice with mice that have a genetic defect that renders them unable to produce lymphotoxin, a molecule that helps to regulate interactions between the immune system and bacteria in the bowel. Mice lacking lymphotoxin, they found, do not gain extra weight, even after prolonged consumption of a high-fat diet.
On a standard diet, both groups of mice maintained a steady weight. But after nine weeks on a high-fat diet, the normal mice increased their weight by one-third, most of it fat. Mice lacking lymphotoxin ate just as much, but did not gain weight.
The high-fat diet triggered changes in gut microbes for both groups. The normal mice had a substantial increase in a class of bacteria (Erysopelotrichi) previously associated with obesity and related health problems. Mice that lacked lymphotoxin were unable to clear segmented filamentous bacteria, which has previously been found to induce certain immune responses in the gut.
The role of gut microbes was confirmed when the researchers transplanted bowel contents from the study mice to normal mice raised in a germ-free environment -- and thus lacking their own microbiome. Mice who received commensal bacteria from donors that made lymphotoxin gained weight rapidly. Those that got the bacteria from mice lacking lymphotoxin gained much less weight for about three weeks, until their own intact immune system began to normalize their bacterial mix.
When housed together, the mice performed their own microbial transplants. Mice are coprophagic; they eat each other's droppings. In this way, the authors note, mice housed together "colonize one another with their own microbial communities." After weeks together, even mice with the immune defect began to gain weight. They also were able to reduce the presence of segmented filamentous bacteria in their stool.
Moving from normal chow to the high-fat diet initiated a series of related changes, the authors found. First, it altered the balance of microbes in the digestive system. These changes in the microbiome altered the immune response, which then introduced further changes to the intestinal microbial community.
These changes "provide inertia for the obese state," the authors said, facilitating more efficient use of scarce food resources.
"Our results suggest that it may be possible to learn how to regulate these microbes in ways that could help prevent diseases associated with obesity," said Vaibhav Upadhyay, first author of the study and an MD/PhD student working in Fu's laboratory. "We now think we could inhibit the negative side effects of obesity by regulating the microbiota and perhaps manipulating the immune response."
Or, 20 years from now, "when there are 10 billion people living on earth and competing for food, we may want to tilt digestive efficiency in the other direction," Fu added.
The authors cautioned, however, that with more than 500 different strains of bacteria present in the gut, "the precise microbes that promote such weight gain and the specific host responses that foster their growth need to be better established."
The National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association supported this research. Additional authors include Valeriy Poroyko, Tai-jin Kim, Suzanne Devkota, Sherry Fu, Alexei Tumanov, Ekaterina Koroleva, Liufu Deng, Cathryn Nagler and Eugene Chang of the University of Chicago, and Hong Tang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The manuscript is dedicated to the memory of co-author Donald Liu, MD, PhD, who died Aug. 5.
I received a MOTHERLODE of personal artifacts from a cousin in the mail yesterday - an album containing letters from the Civil War back home describing the soldiers conditions; letters from home to the Civil War soldier describing home life; personal correspondence with details about everyday life; and even a couple of WWII rationing coupon books.
Included was an entire scrapbook album filled with family photos, vacation photos, nearly everything is over a hundred years old! The photos are small, but clear. I can open the album flat (highly unusual) and scan at 600 dpi. Oh my gosh! I will be scanning for a month if I choose to scan everything!
This is LO #1 using Ginger 2 Page Kit by Elizabeth Weaver with no alterations besides resizing & rotating, clearing shadows and then re-shadowing. The title is simply a text cut out showing the paper beneath with a drop shadow. The bottom of the photo was nasty, so I added the top of a page frame - 95% of the frame is actually off the page.
The kit is a super one to use for Genealogy because it includes everything one needs to add a bit of zip and a lot of style to dull B&W photos.
