In total, 20 groups were formed consisting of every combination of genders. Each group was assigned one of the following scenarios: drink an alcoholic beverage, drink a placebo beverage or drink a nonalcoholic control beverage.

The alcoholic beverage contained one part vodka and 3.5 parts cranberry-juice cocktail, with a lower dose of vodka for women. To make placebo beverages more credible, glasses were smeared with vodka.

While seated at a round table, the participants drank three of their assigned beverages over the course of 36 minutes.

Group drinking sessions were videotaped so the researchers could analyze individual and group interactions frame by frame for facial action and group speech behavior.

Alcohol fueled social bonding and increased the amount of time people spent talking to one another. It also increased the frequency and enhanced the coordination of "true" smiles, the researchers said: All three members of the groups drinking alcohol were more likely to smile at the same time than the other groups.

Still, the sheer popularity of the site ? and its heavy use by up-to-the-second journalists ? mean that even modest outages quickly become news. In June, Twitter experienced problems that lasted about two hours. The company blamed a technical glitch.

Social networking sites are expected o receive an unprecedented surge of activity by sports fans during the Olympics. At the recent UEFA European Football Championship final, users fired off more than 15,000 tweets per second, setting a sports-related record for the site.

Social media users were already complaining about an earlier outage that affected Google's chatting services. The Mountain View, California-based company said Thursday morning that the majority of users were seeing error messages and unable to use its Google Talk service. The issues were resolved five hours later.

The Lieberman-Collins cybersecurity bill moved one step closer to passing Thursday afternoon. The Senate voted in favor of a motion to proceed 84-11 after a lengthy and contentious debate. The bill now faces additional changes before being brought up for a full vote.

The Cybersecurity Act, or CSA, is the Senate's attempt to address cybersecurity reform. Senate leadership considers such reform a priority for the current term that ends in January.

As written, the CSA would set up an optional program where businesses deemed critical to the national infrastructure (such as power grids) would be asked to meet cybersecurity standards set by a group of government agencies. It would also establish a protocol for government agencies and businesses to share cybersecurity threat information with one another.

The bill originally called for government-mandated cybersecurity standards for key infrastructure with no opt-out. Senate Rebublicans considered that to be an example of excessive regulation. The opt-in compromise was the key factor in reducing Republican opposition.

The CSA has support from some technology companies including Cisco and Oracle, while IBM is against it. Additionally, Internet privacy groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation have warned that some of the bill?s language is dangerously vague.

Should the CSA eventually pass the Senate, it will move to the House, which has already passed a very different cybersecurity bill - the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA. Discrepancies between the bills would have to be worked out by the two chambers before they would be able to send it to President Obama.

The differences between the Senate and House bills?

CISPA is focused on information sharing between the government and businesses, and includes no federally-mandated cybersecurity standards. It's also opposed by the White House. President Obama has given a tentative thumbs-up to the Senate's bill, with the caveat that the latest version dropped "some of the key provisions of earlier bills."

President Obama?s June announcement (that DREAM Act-eligible youth would be spared from deportation and granted work permits) was widely applauded as a move that would finally grant relief to young immigrants and allow them to move toward legal status.? But a shady, cynical cadre of fraudulent lawyers and notarios has already sprung up, prepared to take advantage of DREAMers confused about the process and desperate to apply.? These scammers are charging thousands of dollars in fees and disappearing with their clients? money, having provided no legal help or aid.

Now, in New York, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo?s administration has announced a dedicated plan to thwart opportunities for fraud and prevent local notarios from preying on young victims.? From the New York Times today:

Mr. Cuomo?s plan calls for a multilingual news media outreach campaign, community programs and the mobilization of lawyers across New York State to help immigrants navigate the Obama administration?s policy, which was?announced?last month?

Under Mr. Cuomo?s plan, which will be announced on Thursday, New York will pay for a team of immigration lawyers to work with organizations throughout the state to help illegal immigrants who qualify for the new policy and who seek federal permission to remain in the United States legally?

The New York Department of State has set aside $600,000 for the legal counsel team.

The state also plans to expand its immigrant service hot line to include information about the policy and to direct callers to service providers who can help young immigrants.

The president?s deferred action announcement left eligible immigrants and potential applicants scrambling for details, since the US Citizenship and Immigration Services has yet to finalize a plan for accepting applications and processing young immigrants.? DREAMer-run groups like United We DREAM have stepped up to fill in the gap, putting out a Frequently Asked Questions guide and a warning for applicants to avoid notarios. ??To be clear: there is not yet an application process in place, and the application process will not be open until August 15.

Cuomo?s determination to protect New York immigrant youth from scammers may stem from his days as New York?s attorney general, when he made cracking down on immigration fraud a top priority.? While plenty of organizations have taken steps to warn immigrants about notarios, New York state is going above and beyond in its dedication to prevent fraud.

As Cesar A. Perales, New York?s secretary of state, told the New York Times:

It?s not enough to say to people, ?Be careful; some people want to take your money.?? What we?re saying is we?re also providing an alternative mechanism. That is what distinguishes what New York State wants to do from others who just warn you.

"We do not want him dead -- just for him to go and let us live in peace," he says. "It is time for us to be the masters of our destiny."

But while the group of artists joke and laugh, their support for the uprising against Assad's regime has drawn attention and, with it, threats.

"One night," Mazir recalls, "the secret police stormed my house and took my father. They held him for 10 days and tortured him. All this because a neighbour told them about me."

"But I am not afraid -- if I die, it will be knowing that I have helped overthrow the regime and bring freedom to all Syrians," she adds proudly.

Though Mazir and Ayman spoke of the role their paintings and caricatures could play in efforts to oust Assad and his regime, others within the studio said art alone would do little to overthrow the embattled president.

"I am delighted to paint, and help my friends organise the demonstrations, but I am well aware that it will not be caricatures that will end Bashar's regime," says Ibrahim, who deserted the Syrian army to join forces with Syrian rebels. "It will be weapons."

"We can only fight violence with violence. And now, it is they who are afraid," he adds.

The artists' collective has already had an impact, drawing young followers hoping to contribute to Qusayr's rallies.

Two sisters -- aged 15 and 23 -- have for a month brought their own art supplies to take part in the "revolution."

Doha, the teen, impressed protesters with her artistic abilities and is now one of the most popular artists in Qusayr.

Her elder sister Fatima, an English teacher, explains that while "the young men joined the FSA (Free Syrian Army) and us, the women, were confined to our homes to watch them be killed."

"We wanted to bring our small contribution to the bigger effort."

The pair divide the work between them -- Doha does the drawing and Fatima the colouring.

"I can do 20 of these a week," Doha declares.

Fatima adds that her sister's work "criticises the absence of freedom of expression. In our school textbooks, the prevailing view was what the regime wanted us to think was reality."

"The lives of Syrians have always been a tragedy," she says. "For years, we have been subjected to a regime that oppresses us. But now, it is done."

"That may seem paradoxical, because they are bombing us, they are killing us, but we have our freedom to choose our destiny, freedom or death."

Flashing a broad smile, Doha says: "Our drawings and paintings are our way to take revenge on the regime."

LONDON (AP) ? There's nearly a week to go before the Olympics kick off in London and British officials are stuck playing defense.

On Thursday, the country's Olympics secretary said 1,200 extra troops were put on standby in case embarrassing manpower shortages get any worse, while U.K. border agents announced a strike for the day before the games begin.

The one-two punch of bad news comes with only eight days to go, unbalancing a government which might have hoped to bask in glow of pre-Olympic buildup. By far, the most embarrassing episode has been the inability of security contractor G4S PLC to deliver on its promise to supply about 10,400 guards to help keep the games safe ? a last-minute admission which has forced the government to call in 3,500 soldiers to help meet the shortfall.

Speaking Thursday, Olympics Secretary Jeremy Hunt acknowledged that even that may not be enough, telling the BBC that the government put the extra 1,200 troops on standby "in the unlikely situation that G4S's performance deteriorates from where it is today."

"We want to ensure the public against every eventuality," he told Sky News earlier. "We don't expect to use them, but they will be there."

Security has been a critical concern for the Olympics ever since 11 Israeli athletes and coaches died in a terror attack at the 1972 Munich Games. A huge international media presence makes the Olympics a prime target for any terror group intent on wreaking havoc on live events broadcast worldwide, and British authorities have pegged the threat level for the London Games as "severe," meaning an attack is "highly likely."

In that context, the inability of government officials to get a proper grip with staffing issues has become a major talking point, an issue which has been compounded by industrial disputes that threaten to spawn two Olympics strikes.

One, involving about 400 train workers, threatens to disrupt services in central England from Aug. 6 to 8. That could be a major games-related inconvenience ? Olympic soccer matches are being held across the U.K., while workers and Olympic tourists from outside London are relying on those routes to get into the capital.

Potentially more serious is a walkout by border guards at London's Heathrow Airport timed for July 26 ? the day before the London Olympics begin. Members of the Public and Commercial Services Union voted for the 24-hour strike in a dispute over pay and job losses on Thursday, saying its members would also take other forms of industrial action, such as a ban on overtime from July 27 to Aug. 20 ? a period that's expected to be one of the busiest periods ever for London's airports.

Even without the strike, London's Heathrow Airport has been beset for months by sporadic long lines at passport control, which the union blames on government spending cuts. The problem had eased in the last week as thousands of Olympic VIPs arrived for the games, but a walkout threatens a return of the endless waits at the worst possible moment for Britain's international image.

Home Secretary Theresa May, Britain's interior minister, called the decision to stage a strike on the eve of the games shameful. She said the government would "put contingency arrangements in place to ensure we can deal with people coming through the border as smoothly as possible."

During previous border guard strikes in November and May, the government drafted in managers and civil servants ? including Prime Minister David Cameron's press secretary ? to help staff immigration desks and minimize the disruption to incoming travelers.

With headlines dominated by bad news about strikes and security, some are wondering whether Cameron's government might have done more, and sooner, to avoid the mess.

As Hunt made his announcement about more troops, May acknowledged that officials had been warned last month about Olympic security manpower issues ? far earlier than she had previously admitted.

In a letter to an opposition lawmaker Keith Vaz, May wrote that she was told of a "possible temporary shortfall" in staffing numbers by G4S as long ago as June 27 and that she had already begun marshaling military resources as a contingency.

That's far earlier than the July 11 date that May had previously mentioned to lawmakers in Britain's House of Commons.
