As winter arrives, students stuff Kennedy Sports and Recreation

Within the realm of higher education, a rift exists between academia and athletics. The two groups battle over anything from school pride to the allocation of school funds. Juniata College?s athletic achievement is consistently overshadowed by the school?s academic success, and deservedly so. Our revolutionary Program of Emphasis curriculum has 96 percent of our students graduate in four years.

With that being said, our sports teams are nothing to scoff at. Juniata has experienced 120 All-Americans, 47 conference championships and eight Division III volleyball national championships. Many of these accolades were received after the completion of Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center in 1983, which is in need. of renovations.

Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center (Kennedy) holds within its walls the Juniata College athletic department. The building houses the Sam and Martha Brumbaugh Fitness Center, the Binder Natatorium, the Memorial and intramural gymnasiums and multiple locker rooms. Also, coaches from all sports, discounting football, have office space throughout the structure. While Kennedy serves as a second home to most athletes and coaches and is therefore cherished, it is an outdated, undersized excuse for a training facility.

Before you assume that this recreation center should be burned to the ground, the building indeed has its advantages. Within Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center, the Memorial Gymnasium is aesthetically pleasing and provides a great atmosphere as it plays host to our volleyball and basketball teams. Inside the gym, around the playing court, resides a mezzanine, which allows for spectators to get different views of the action throughout the competitions. The remaining structure, which is conveniently located in the middle of campus, inadequately serves athletes and the public.

The main problem with Kennedy is its insufficient amount of space. Sam and Martha Brumbaugh Fitness Center offers various workout machines to improve both strength and cardiovascular endurance. As the winter months approach and athletic teams are forced to train indoor, the limited room proves as stressful as the thought of that 10-page paper you, as a student, have come to sweat away. So, what good is this equipment when you might not get the chance to operate it? Both members of sports teams and the Juniata community often are forced to squeeze into the packed weight room or revamp their schedules to work out at less busy times. With busy work schedules, many students might be driven to forget about their health and skip their workouts.

As another result of Kennedy?s lack of space, teams in 2012 were forced to shuffle locker rooms. To give credit, this came as a result of a plan to renovate old locker rooms or construct new ones. While athletes wait for the conclusion of this project, multiple teams have been forced to share existing
locker rooms.

During this fall season, both the men?s soccer and cross-country teams had to use unfamiliar locations within Kennedy. The soccer team is using the undersized baseball locker room, while sharing aspects of both the football and basketball rooms, which are adjacent. The 2012 men?s cross-country team is currently occupying the men?s pool locker room, which is open to the public. With an unknown number of bodies inhabiting these less than ideal conditions, infections and disease have been thought to originate here.

?I?m friends with the cross country guys, and two of the runners got MRSA this season,? said junior Andy Blunk. ?Now this doesn?t mean that their locker room was definitely the reason, but I don?t think any other sports team had two severe cases of infection like that.?

The intramural gymnasium, or IM gym, might be the second most-utilized area in Kennedy. During the winter, both men?s and women?s basketball can hold practice in the IM gym, as well as both volleyball teams. In addition to these four teams, most off-season squads attempt to train in this gym. These out-of-season teams often have to fight just to get an hour or two of free gym time, if it is actually available, and forces them to practice late at night. Here lies another problem, as intramural basketball and soccer leagues schedule hours of gym time every night during this time.

The solution is simple; Juniata needs a larger athletic facility. Yes, this might seem like a rather grand request, but this is the trend for successful collegiate athletic programs. Compare Juniata?s facilities to Drew University?s. Drew is a member of the same conference as Juniata, the Landmark Conference, and has advanced their athletic program through their Simon Forum.

Drew?s 1,725 undergraduate students are comparable to Juniata?s 1,619 undergraduates. In comparison to Kennedy, Drew?s Simon Forum is a recreation center that was completed in 1994. The center includes an indoor 200-meter track, an eight-lane NCAA pool, a basketball gymnasium, two exercise rooms, squash and racquetball courts, and a forum that seats 4,000 for special events. The forum can also be converted into four full-size courts for basketball, indoor tennis or volleyball.

Understanding that the nature of these advancements require funding, it might take awhile for Juniata to be on the same playing field as conference rivals and other Division III opponents. In the mean time, Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center will continue to accommodate athletes and the public as best as possible. As members of the Juniata, we are able to adapt to and make the best of less than desirable conditions. Kennedy does not have ideal circumstances, but when the student body gathers to chant and cheer on their Eagle teams in the Memorial Gymnasium, there is no better place to watch an event.

Intrigue swirls around Russia defense chief's fall

MOSCOW (AP) ? Vladimir Putin fired his powerful defense chief over a corruption scandal Tuesday, but a heady mix of sex, power struggles and military vendettas dominated talk in Russia about what was really behind the downfall of the man who has overseen the nation's most radical defense reform in decades.

The dismissal of Anatoly Serdyukov was a surprise because the burly politician was widely regarded as having the president's blessing for a military modernization that has won the enmity of generals and arms makers with connections to members of Putin's inner circle.

Adding intrigue was the fact that Serdyukov is married to the daughter one of Putin's close allies, a former prime minister who wields enormous influence as chairman of state-run oil giant Gazprom. Media reports suggest that Serdyukov's alleged philandering angered Viktor Zubkov and may have been a factor in the sacking.

But most experts see a behind-the-scenes power struggle at the root of Putin's decision.

Serdyukov has masterminded a campaign to drastically cut the ranks of officers and overhaul an antiquated military structure to create a leaner, meaner force that might restore Russia's faded military glory.

In particular, he has aggressively demanded higher quality and cheaper prices from the military industry ? ruffling powerful business interests. That is seen as having set off an internal struggle in which Kremlin allies of leading arms makers have conspired to bring Serdyukov down.

"He angered the leaders of defense industries, refusing to sign new contracts until they make their prices fully transparent," said Alexander Golts, an independent Moscow-based military expert. "And he told them that the military will buy the weapons it needs, not the weapons they want to sell."

Dmitri Trenin, director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, told The Associated Press that Serdyukov's moves to "replace the very foundation of the Russian military system" won him powerful enemies.

"A lot of entrenched interests benefited from that system," Trenin said.

Putin made the announcement in a meeting with Moscow regional governor Sergei Shoigu, whom he appointed as the new minister. Some observers predict that Shoigu may take a less radical approach to military reform.

While giving few details, the president linked the move to a probe announced by the country's top investigative agency last month into the sale of military assets, including real estate. The Investigative Committee says the state suffered damages of 3 billion rubles ($95 million) in just a few cases reviewed.

The corruption case first surfaced last month and involves Oboronservice, a state-controlled company whose activities include servicing military aircraft and arms and building military facilities.

In the course of the probe, investigators carried out an early morning search of the apartment of Yevgeniya Vasilyeva, a senior Oboronservice official who was once a close aide of Serdyukov in the Defense Ministry. Serdyukov reportedly was alone at the apartment with Vasilyeva when police turned up ? fueling rumors of an affair.

"The scandal behind the scandal is a personal scandal that has been rumored in Mr. Serdyukov's family," Trenin said.

Serdyukov, a former furniture salesman, entered public service as a tax official and quickly rose through the ranks to become head of the Russian tax service before being appointed defense minister in 2007. Russian media have speculated that he owed his meteoric rise to marrying Zubkov's daughter.

Whatever the origins of Serdyukov's success, it's clear that he made a profound impact on Russia as its military chief.

Serdyukov's reform led to the dismissal of 200,000 officers, disbanded nine out of 10 military units and turned over once untouchable military assets to civilian hands.

"Serdyukov's reform marked a break with the Russian military culture," said Golts. "Russian military officers simply can't imagine a different military model."

Under Serdyukov, the military purchased amphibious assault vessels from France, bought Israeli drones, Italian armored vehicles and other foreign weapons in an unprecedented slap in the face of Russian military industrial complex.

"He has made powerful foes by ending purchases of obsolete weapons," said Igor Korotchenko, a retired colonel of Russia's military general staff who is now editor of National Defense magazine.

He said that a battle for the distribution of 20 trillion rubles ($635 billion) that the Kremlin plans to spend on buying new weapons through 2020 was likely a key reason behind Serdyukov's firing.

Speculation about Serdyukov's possible downfall has floated around for years, but he had received Putin's staunch backing until now. Putin authorized and publicly praised Serdyukov's reforms, and some observers expect that they will continue, although perhaps at a slower pace, under his successor.

"The continuation of the military reform is inevitable," Korotchenko said. "Radical changes that have been made in the command system and the structure of the military can't be reversed."

But others warned that Shoigu, who had served as the nation's Emergency Situations minister for two decades before being appointed regional governor half a year ago, would likely face a strong pressure from the top brass to take a less radical approach to military reform.

"The new boss will have to take a new approach differing from that of his predecessor," said Golts, "and that would create a good opportunity for those who want to stop this reform."

Amgen experimental drug lowers cholesterol in mid-stage trial

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Amgen Inc's experimental drug AMG145 reduced levels of bad cholesterol by as much as 55 percent in combination with statin drugs in patients genetically predisposed to high cholesterol, according to data from a midstage trial presented on Monday.

The new drug, given by injection every four weeks, is part of a promising new class of biotech medicines known as PCSK9 inhibitors designed to target a protein that prevents the body from removing artery blocking LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream.

Statins, such as Pfizer Inc's Lipitor and AstraZeneca's Crestor, work by preventing the liver from making cholesterol.

The Phase II trial found that after 12 weeks, patients treated with a low dose of AMG145 had a 43 percent reduction in LDL, while those given a higher dose had a drop of 55 percent. Patients treated with a placebo saw a 1 percent increase in LDL cholesterol.

The trial, presented here at the annual scientific meeting of the American Heart Association, included 168 patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, in which a defective gene inherited from one parent impairs the ability to properly metabolize LDL. The disorder is estimated to affect about one in 500 people and causes extremely high cholesterol.

The most common side effects seen in the trial were injection-site reactions, cold-like symptoms and headache.

AMG145, along with other PCSK9 inhibitors being developed by companies like Pfizer, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc in partnership with Sanofi and Roche, is a man-made antibody.

Concept Art for Games (and other Entertainment Media) Brief ...

The Brief below was given to Level 3, Year 2, Btec Extended Diploma Students ? All of whom had chosen the course and its leaning towards Design for Entertainment Media.

This project allows the student to explore the work and process of Concept Artists in the Games Industry (amongst others) and to develop vocabulary, skills and good practice related to this field.

The transferable nature of many of the skills sets looked at in this project are discussed allowing students to see the wider value of this project and the development work produced.

?

Time being limited on a course such as this, many of the areas explored cannot be developed fully.

This project takes up seven weeks of the students study time.

The longer the project the more development work would be expected.

?

Background

??have a grasp of context, detail and the rationale which makes design and image-making worthwhile to yourself, and commercially to someone else?

Honestly, I get scared [?] every time I start a new, big job. I read, I gather information and push the client to tell me what they want. (Sometimes they really don?t know, and those jobs are usually nightmares!) Remember details, notice how people move, how sunlight cascades over moving objects, why foliage looks the way it does (it?s nature?s own fractal magic) and how come velvet has about the same range of value as metallic surfaces but one is soft and the other is brittle. And finally, don?t assume that technique alone will save you? It still is the idea that wins?every time. Remember that elaborate technique and dumb story produces a demo reel, not a narrative.?

- A Visionary Ethic: The Life and Work of Syd Mead, p.3, OuterCircle 9, Autumn 2006

?

In the world of Design for Entertainment Media, the ability to render ?Visual Development? art to sell an idea or ?Concept? is high on the list of the designer/illustrator; whether that concept is for a Game, a Film, a Comic Book, a TV show or a Toy Line.

?Concept Art? can for the most part be divided into, or be a combination of, three main skill sets. Character Design, Prop and Object Design and Environment Design.

During the course of this project you will explore the reasoning behind and the practical tasks associated with developing Concept Art for Games (and other Entertainment Media such as Film, Animation, Comics, Toy Lines and Performance).

??

  • PART A ? Research into Concept Art for Games (and other Entertainment Media) begins week 1 of project.

You are to investigate and critically evaluate the purpose and parameters of Concept Art for Games (and other Entertainment Media), investigating the heritage of both the industry, and the techniques used, practitioners and skillsets, and relevant industry terminology.

These investigations should be evidenced as richly illustrated research sheets (with found images and examples of your own if appropriate) and/or posts to your creative blog.

??

  • PART B ? Visual Development of Concept Art for Games (or other Entertainment Media) begins week 1 of project.

Story Choice ? You must choose from one of the following:

1 ? Any of the animal based Aesop?s Fables ? turning the animals back into human characters;

2 ? La finta nonna (The False Grandmother) ? Anon, or Le Petit Chaperon Rouge by Charles Perrault (?LOOK IT UP!);

3 ? Moby Dick by Herman Melvile;

or,

4 ? Shakespeare?s A Midsummer Nights Dream or Hamlet.

?

Each of these must be adapted and visually developed as a Concept Art based ?Pitch?, looking at the story not in its original form but through the lens of either:

a, A Steampunk theme;

b, A Science Fiction/Extreme Futuristic/Alien Culture setting;

c. A Gangland/Third World Slum/Ghetto Setting;

or,

d, A full-blown Costume Opera, Street Theatre/Performance.

?

(Be aware, those students who find selection of the above difficult during the first session will be assigned their brief on a role of a dice, or online random number/letter generator)

?

You are to as fully as possible develop a visual response to the story above using one of the themes given and utilising the methods and techniques used by Concept Artists for games and other Entertainment Media visual development teams.

??

?Usually when anyone starts to design an [?] from their imagination, they draw what they know and what they have already seen. We all live on the same planet, and with the widespread availability of the internet and movies we are all looking at the same things most of the time.

A designer can be sent down the path of creating something more original by emptying his or her visual library through producing a high volume of fast thumbnail sketches [?] working through the boredom can frequently allow for moments of inspiration and the exploration of truly original ideas and styles.?

-?????? Scott Robertson ACCD instructor, founder of Design Studio Press.

??

Each part of the following set of tasks should involve a full design process.

  • Part 1 ? Character Development. begins week 1 of project.

One of the key commodities (and by that I mean ?saleable? items) from amongst the concept artist and designers repertoire is the Character.

Characters (along with Story) are the driving force behind the design and successful uptake by an audience for Games, Animation, Film, TV and even web and Print based media; and many successful characters are taken beyond the media for which they were created. Some appearing in other media (games characters with their own comics), toy and clothing lines, appearing on everything from pencil cases to lunchboxes.

Characters might include all human (-iform) characters, aliens, ghosts, gods, demons; animals and creatures of all types (speaking or non-speaking); robots, androids and mecha; A.I.?s (disembodied or with a computer interface), possessed or anthropomorphosised inanimates or vehicles (Herbie*, Stephen King?s Christine* and the ship in Farscape* are all characters as are talking vehicles such as those in Pixars ?Cars? movie), and any plants with intelligently mobile tendrils/tentacles/roots etc.

You should begin by listing all the key characters from your chosen narrative and their attributes and traits if relevant.

At least one of your characters should be humaniform, meaning you must consider human anatomy and various costume designs as part of your character design.

Your design sheets should include: rapid pen/brush pen thumbnails, silhouettes, pencil thumbnails, head shots, variant costume designs, multi angle views of the figure, marker sketches, watercolour and pen and ink renders, digital renders inc. photoshop sketches and full colour artwork, and perhaps if appropriate 3D digital models and fimo/clay maquettes (see examples and handouts given in session)

?

  • Part 2a ? Props & Objects. begins week 3 of project.

Your character will no doubt interact with Objects and/or Props, inanimate non-sentient things that could be: weapons, cartable/potable items such as books, radios, communication devices, amulets, or heavier objects such as boxes/crates, barrels, special feature environment items such as thrones, feature tables, statues etc or?

  • Part 2b ? Vehicles. begins week 3 of project.

?

?vehicles, including cars, tanks, skateboards, unicycles, airships, helicoptors, boats, fuituristic transport ships, flying machines, rickshaws etc.

Look at the work of industrial, product and automotive concept artists, how do they render vehicles to show their clients/art directors.

Your vehicle and prop/object designs should go through the same process as your character designs, from scrappy thumbnails to final colour renders, and perhaps models using a variety of media and techniques to fully explore all design possibilities.

  • Part 3 ? Environments. begins week 4 of project.

?

Your character will also no doubt carry or move those (portable) objects and vehicles into and through a particular environment, or perhaps several differing ones.

Your environments could be interiors, exteriors, natural or man-made these environments can often (especially interiors) be examples of ?character design? in themselves, showing us, without the characters presence, the nature of the character(s) that inhabits the space.

Will your environment be awe-inspiring in its grandiosity or subtle, claustrophobic, intimate? What feeling do you wish to convey, from who?s perspective or POV will we be seeing it?

Remember! Some artwork can show atmosphere, some the explicit form. Perhaps using both to explain your environment concept/idea would be best.

?

  • Part 4 ? Fully integrated narrative Concept Images/Art. begins week 5 of project.

?

During this project you will create examples taken from all three of these areas, finally bringing them together in a single concept image (or perhaps a storyboard) that illustrates some important or crucial narrative element within your concept.

You may wish to look beyond Concept art at this stage and look at other forms of narrative image making, comics, illustrated books, murals, tapestries, narrative fine art paintings, poster art etc. You should discuss these wider investigations in your sketch notes/annotations and on your creative blog.

Consider the format/ratio of your image/s. Don?t just stick to A-sized images, why not try something in extreme widescreen/letterbox format, or extreme portrait like traditional oriental prints. The nature of your image should dictate the format, not just whatever paper you had to hand.

Your image should be fully rendered, this can be monochrome or colour as appropriate, but half finished pencil sketches will not be acceptable.

??

  • PART C ? Presentation of Concept/s. begins week 7 of project.

?

Your final proposals should be presented as professional presentation boards, whether printed or digitally via your creative blog or using an alternative presentation medium such as Prezi or Video (sound should be considered for any video presentation), if presented online the final designs should be presented in a coherent order that explains clearly your concept (you should not need to scroll between blog posts and websites to find your next image).

Thumbnails and early designs may be included in this presentation but should be severely edited, and only used when relevant to discussing key conceptual developments or ideas. Key ideas and images should have been developed fully during the design process.

All presentations should culminate with the final narrative image that sums up your over all concept in one image utilising many of the elemnets explored previously i.e Characters, Objects, and Environment.

?

REMEMBER ? Target Market/Audience may well be relevant if trying to keep your concept cohesive ? Is your design for children? Is it for an adult/mature audience? Are you trying to attract serious readers/viewers? Or are you trying to evoke a sense of fun? UNDERSTAND AND DESIGN FOR YOUR INTENDED AUDIENCE ? THERE SHOULD BE A CLEAR IDEA THAT THIS WOULD APPEAL TO YOUR CHOSEN AUDIENCE.
